Looking for advice on a lower. I am considering this complete lower from Spikes: http://www.spikestactical.com/spider-bullet-lower-w-enhanced-kit-m4-stock-p-593.html
This complete lower from BCM: http://www.primaryarms.com/bcm-lrg-stk-mod-0-blk/p/bcm-lrg-stk-mod-0-blk/ Or a Black Rain lower with a Daniel Defense lowerparts kit. I would appreciate your input and am open to other recommendations. Thank you |

I came here looking for good advice when I was looking at putting together a good AR setup in 2012. I ended up going with a Spikes lower and a PSA upper with a CHF barrel. I'm not sure a CHF barrel is better, but I bought it because it was made by FN. 25 years in the military and I shot a lot of Colts and FNs. Liked both, but seemed to shoot the FNs better. Anyway, I recently traded that AR to my Chief, whom was in desperate need of an AR for SWAT, but didn't have the cash. I miss it, and considered putting together another one just like it, but I am also interested in what else is out there that is good quality, reliable, accurate, and reasonably priced. I received good advice last time, so came back again looking for more input, as things may have chqnged quite a bit in 3 years. Actually, I didn't know forged was stronger than billet. Thanks for the info; I just spent some time researching it, and feel enlightened...a little. I believe ours were all forged in the military, but there is better than milspec.
Thanks, any more suggestions or input from anyone? |

With lowers these days if it is forged it is mostly about roll marks. There are some minor differences that may not make a difference to you like if the pistol grip hole is drilled all the way through( I like that because I put a stop in there to reduce over travel), or the rear take-down pin detent threading which is nice to have to keep the spring in if you are changing stocks or switching between a pistol, and rifle configuration. Another thing people like, or don't like is the forged built in trigger guard. Some say it makes a lower even stronger. What I liked in the past were the Surplus ammo and arms lowers with the new retical logo instead of their name all over it. They are clean, and have the extra threaded portions I was mentioning. They are made by Aero Precision out of Tacoma Washington. You can purchase them directly from them as well with a different "A" roll mark. I like them because of the features, quality, and price. For a time they were a great deal when Aim surplus sold them. Now they carry the Anderson lowers that some say do not have the features I mentioned, and have a big, ugly horse roll mark. My suggestion is pick a forged lower that you like. Additional threading can be done with a tap, and 10 minutes. Mega, Noveski, Aero, BCM, LMT, ect, ect all make a good product that is considered military spec, but that is another whole thread. Ultimately, you have to look at it every time you take it out of the bag so get something that wont make you have any regrets later, like a spikes lower with dueling cocks. |

Forged is stronger than milled or billet? Are you sure about that is every case? Is true back when most billets were 6061 aluminum. But a lot of billets are thicker in places. More metal more strength, especial when both a 7075 aluminum. So I don't think you can say this is an every case truth. All things being equal, dimensions and metal, yea forged is supposed to be SLIGHTLY stronger than billet. Quoted:

The only way to "match" the strength is to add extra metal. So technically, if you want a billet lower you could go with that all things being equal, but it will be thicker, and heavier to match the given strength of a standard forged lower. Also, don't forget that they are forging lowers with built in trigger guards now as well which increased their strength. |
| I just did a build off of a Black Rain Lower. I started out to use the upper as well but the extension seemed loose with a barrel installed. Ended up using a MUR and it works like a champ. I really liked the Black Rain Ordnance look and luster after a set to build from. Afterward.....not so much. The rear of the trigger guard has a corner that acts more like a needle when you grip it. I need to file it down, but the ceracoat is brand new and I wanna enjoy that look before making some functional mods. Solid receivers but they need some fine tuning. |
