Ok, I want to know, is it smart to go ahead and purchase a COMPLETE lower now for a new rock river I want? Because I have saved only 400 dollars and I am about to frickin die to spend it. I know that I want another middy Rock River, so should I go ahead and purchase the lower? I just want to know everyones experience doing this... Thanks

ETA: I am a college kid, and money doesn't come often... And this whole ban thing is scaring me.... So, what to do?

You have awhile before any ban is in place. With that said as soon as you find out about a new ban so will everyone else and there will be buying frenzies and price spikes I bet.

Seems like folks say to stock up on lowers...I guess since they are considered the firearm everything else can be had later.

So its a good idea to go ahead and purhcase the lower? Even is no ban is in place, a scare could bring down inventory and jack up prices? I think I'll just go ahead and order it and worry about the upper later.

As a fellow university/college/whatever student, I feel your pain.  I did just what you're talking about, and have a Stag lower sitting in my closet... mocking me with it's lack of upper.

Buying your AR bits at a time definately helps on the college budget.  Just be prepared for the mind-numbing pain of knowing all you need is an upper and you'll have a shootable rifle.

search for the $80 lower thread, i can't remember where it is.

also, there are $45 blemished A2 uppers available in a thread I saw recently.  So, with a $150 barrel & $52 lower parts kit from JSE surplus, you're close to there!

who's to say the that next ban won't be more pervasive making other parts as critical to get as the lower.

I say wait until you have enough money to get a complete rifle all at once.  It's like getting a car now without tires so you can afford the nice rims later.  Sort of pointless, eh?  I have also seen some Rock River lowers that are don't like some uppers of other companies.  So unless you are sure you're going all RRA, then it is even better for you to wait and get a complete rifle.

But with that aside, don't pass up on a good deal when you see one.

look towards the bottom of this page for some more ideas.

I will say that one good thing about doing it this way is that having the lower around both commits and compels one to finish the weapon, rather than saying to yourself,
"I'm going to buy that rifleone day, if I can just save enough money....."

My 2cents.

I am in the same boat you are in and that's what I did. Well actualy The future-father-in-law found out and assembled a complete lower for me for x-mass (I love that guy!!!)

I am also going to order some 30 round clips while they are cheep.

I dought the price will go down on any of this stuff. There are some great deals on stripped lowers and 30 round mags right now.....

That's what I did.  Still doing it.  Two complete AR's and one stripped lower awaiting money and inspiration.  Bought the parts for the lowers and then bought complete uppers.  I'm partial to Stag lowers and parts.  I have a CMMG 20" upper and a Del-Ton 16" Carbine upper.
If you can get over your RRA tunnel vision for a moment, give Del-Ton a look.

Having the time to assemble the lowers helped me make the right decisions on uppers once I had cash in hand.

I work 50+ hours a week and attend community college.  I share your sleep deprivation and lack of funds.

Yes, buy the lower now.  Trust me, x Kalifornian who was smart enough to buy a few lowers before the commies banned everything. They were priceless to have. Now I still buy stripped lowers once in awhile when the Gun show is in town.

Oh Crap,  I think I'm addicted!!!    BRD

Better to have now then regret you didn't later. Politics are not looking so good and their seems to be fewer real conservatives out there to choose from.

Buy the lower.  The lower has spurred me towards finally finishing my first.  I'd been saying "someday" for a long, long time and never following through.  Every time I'd get close, there was something else to spend the money on.

Buy the lower, you can assemble the rest as money comes in.

....or on second thought, save up another $50 and buy an upper.  As I'm thinking about it, a complete upper (with bolt) may be your limiting factor.  If $400 is tough to come by, you'll still be in that boat when it's time to buy the upper.  If you can get to $450 - $500, buy a complete upper (Stag, J&T, etc).  Then when you get another $125, get a lower.  $50, get the parts kit.  $75, get your stock.

Get the lower 1st as this part IS the weapon. Get the upper next and the rest as you can afford. I know it's hard to save when the $$$'s are burning a hole in your wallet, but if you dont knock the bigs ones down 1st, how are you ever gonna complete it? Just my 2c.
