| Can you replace a carbine stock set up with a rifle stock set up and vice versa? Or does the 16" rule apply , carbine 16 and under, rifle over 16? And if you wanted to make a rifle out of a carbine by replacing the upper and stock, could you still use the same lower? Are lowers carbine/rifle specific? |

There's no "rule" about rifle length. To be legal in the US without filing paperwork and paying a tax stamp, long guns need to meet the 16" barrel and overall length requirements (some of which vary by state).
You can change out the receiver extension (aka buffer tube) to put a rifle style (fixed, A2) stock on a gun with a carbine upper with no problem - no legal issues there. But if you're using a carbine length upper, just be sure to use a carbine buffer. |

The carbine stock assembly is completely different than the rifle stock assembly.
Yes you can freely swap them out. But you have to change the stock, receiver extension, buffer and spring when you do since they are different between the two systems. Don't confuse stocks with gas systems. You can put a carbine gas upper on a rifle stock lower and vice versa without a problem. |

Ah, ok, so you could use a carbine length adjustable stock, of course with tube , spring and buffer, with an 18" upper then? It wont effect the function at all? Correct, but being a resident of NY, unless you have a preban receiver, you are subject to the AWB and cannot have an adjustable stock. |

Right, but if for example you bought an A2 stock that came with a rifle length buffer and then just put a carbine length upper on it it might not work terribly well. Not that I would know anything about that

It has an 18 inch barrel with a rifle length gas system and has a 6 position adjustable stock with a carbine buffer. The buffer does not look like the rifle buffer |

Well, this does have a little to do with it, I have a pre ban lower Olympic Arms. But on the lower , it says CAR-AR below the .223/5.56 and above the Serial Number. Thats why im asking, to make sure that the CAR-AR part doesnt mean Carbine only. I always thought all AR-15 lowers were modular and the same, for the most part. |

A lower is a lower is a lower and so on. It says CAR-AR because that was model that the particular lower you have was used to build or intended to be used to build. |
