So I just bought a tr 15 lower reciever from Thor. It's mil spec and engraved as a CQB. Usually the engraving has to be on the lower when you build a carbine correct? Along with sending off your ATF paperwork I'm assuming. Now if I decide to make it a mid length or 16 and above as a rifle, which requires no ATF paperwork, does it matter if it is engraved as a CQB On the lower? Will I still have to send paperwork to the ATF just because the lower says its a CQB

Was the lower receiver a previously built short barreled rifle?

Was the lower receiver purchased through your FFL dealer as a brand new, stripped lower?

it actually matters alot. because its engraved CQB this rifle can NEVER be taken to the range just for fun. you can NEVER sight it in either. you can only use it for close quarters battle. it is a violation of the law to use it for anything else.

hope that helps.

The lower was bought brand new stripped through ffl

The required markings can be on the receiver, frame, or barrel.  No, that's not just my opinion, it's federal law.  The CQB engraved on the lower currently doesn't mean jack legally speaking.

Ok cool. I just know that's how thor has their lowers engraved off the cnc. I just wasn't sure if it meant shit legally. Cause they have stripped lowers that say rifle or mid length engraved too. I guess they just attach whichever lower they are building to a rifles length

Then you did not fill out paperwork to build a short barreled rifle.

Seems like you can build the receiver into a standard rifle, following the federal laws/local laws. Barrel length of 16 inches, etc.

If you seek to build a short barreled rifle, you need to follow those laws. It will require further paperwork and adding markings to the receiver, of course this assumes the paperwork is approved.

Sounds like you have a standard rifle receiver with "cool guy" markings.

This. OEM  "CQB" markings on a virgin lower don't make it an SBR lower any more than all these goofy zombie rollmarks make you an actual member of Zombie Team 6. Like the guys are saying, if you do decide to form1 the lower as an SBR, make sure you mark the lower as specified by NFA. The squirrellyest part is NFA does not require them to be marked "SBR"  or "CQB" or anything like that. Not to be a jerk or call anyone out, but leonpiper is wrong on every single word and I think it's important to make that clear. (Maybe he was being sarcastic and I just missed it)

Check out the SBR section in the armory. From reading your post, it sounds to me like you are confused on SBR's and how to buy, make, and transfer them. The term CQB has nothing to do with an SBR, and a carbine does not necessarily mean a barrel less than 16".  A 16" carbine can have a carbine or midlength gas system.

kinda surprised you missed it. i laid it on as thick as i could. i was thinking the op would read it and the light would go off "oh, those marks must not mean a damn thing".

I read it a dozen times and thought, "there should be a smiley face or something at the end, can this be real?", Either way, I thought it was important to make it clear to other folks who read through these threads. Sorry if I was a dick about it (seems a lot more obvious now that I read it again

Welcome OP...now read more before posting questions.  That one was pretty lame.  Have fun putting your weapon together!  Make your next post a pic of your build.

no biggie, i was torn about using the blue messed up smiley. thought it was funnier without it, but i can see how the lack of it made you wonder.

It was genuinely funny!  Some people just don't understand sarcasm for humor's sake.  However, I don't mean to have a laugh at the OP's expense; ATF rules are confounded enough that someone less knowledgable might not be sure what the markings mean and what the ATF allows.

It was funny, though.

I think what really got me was the " I hope that helps" at the end, like you had just cleared things up and saved the guy from a lot of trouble. I'm really not that humorless, and you do have to be careful on here because the weirdest crap gets repeated as fact.
