As of now I took my BCM recce upper and putting it on a BCM lower and now I have a RRA lower that needs an upper. I was thinking about going with another 5.56 since I am still working on stock piling ammo. I do reload but it is still not cheap. Only have around 1600 rounds of 5.56 loaded, I continue to shoot and reload, need to buy more brass.
I started thinking about getting something with a bigger punch but don't know if it's worth it. I don't plan on hunting and don't plan on shooting much more than a couple hundred yards. My thoughts and options are 6.8, 300blk out, 50 beuwolf, or another 5.56 Don't want to start another what caliber is better thread, just curious as to what some of you guys would do in my situation. I am sure you guys would agree there are just to many options out there and it's giving me a headache thinking about all of them.
Seems like the 5.56 will do all I need, but would be nice to have something bigger just in case. Thanks |
| I am in the same boat as you. Although, I am picking up a stripped lower tomorrow. I really wanted to go with the .50 beuwolf barrel, but I have been waiting for few months for it to become available from midway. I am now thinking about going with a 458 socom or some kind of 308. I personally want something with more kick than the 5.56. The most hunting(if any) that I would be doing with it is just some ground hogs. I will most likely be waiting for the beuwolf... |

yeah, i am in the same boat with yall.
i am looking around and there is sooooooo many different ways to go with these things, and that IS the reason i bought an AR. but i didnt think about which different caliber i would want to get first, or any for that matter. My wife loves the gun and so now she would like one, do i get another 5.56 or different caliber? (not what really, but what first) does anybody have a back up 5.56, ok that was a dumb question, did anyone get another 5.56 as a back-up before venturing into different calibers? Im so torn, and now I am trying to learn more about balistics and what not, so these tables can hopefully point me in the right direction. |
| If your wife wants one and you don't hunt I think you would be better off going with another 5.56 caliber. This way it is simple, same ammo, mags, parts ect. After getting this then think of another upper in other calibers. You will then get another lower for it and it turns into a complete rifle. It never ends. |

I did a couple of 5.56's with different barrels 20, 14.5, another 20 free float, etc... I had all the parts for my 6.8 delivered and was going to build but I returned them. After reading more about that round I wanted something that was more "reloadable" friendly and with some more range. I went with a LR-308. I took the lower I had and put a .22 upper on it, an absolutely fun gun to shoot without the financial setback By reloadable friendly I mean, I like to load a couple hundred rounds in the morning and shoot them in the afternoon. At the time I was going to do the 6.8 I couldn't do that without retooling my setup (different press) or loading one at a time (not that I mind but a little slow). That plus the parts for the 6.8 AR was about the same as my 308 build and I only needed a set of dies and shell plate to start loading. |
