hey guys!  I am doing my first AR build this year (thanks to this forum) and want to keep it semi-light.  What is the lowest weight, non-carbon upper?

I don't care for the FA, so I was thinking the VLTOR non-monolithic upper with only the brass deflector (I shoot lefty).

This rifle will be 6.8 SPC.

My lower is a mega gator.

I'm going to be offering an upper that will be the lightest aluminum flat top upper available. I'm using the Rock River Arms 9mm flat top as the basis, I will have to machine it for the gas carrier key and the gas tube. If you are unfamiliar with 9mm uppers, most have a standard size ejection port but it appears to be smaller. Remove the 9mm brass deflector and the short door and you can install a regular ejection door cover.

Here is a link to an earlier post on this subject, BTW the price is going to be $165.00.

He's really going to want/need a brass deflector if he shoots left handed.

You can get a very light rifle with careful selection of parts, my advice though is not to let the desire for the lightest possible weight overly compromise the utility of the rifle.
