Might be acquiring 4 or 5 M16 Upper parts and would like to build them.
All A1 upper parts minus the barrel. What are my options for the barrel? Can I get a non-retro one tuned down to .625 for the gas port and forward to use the gasblock and handgaurd cap? Or should I just get a .750 handguard cap, new handguards and a .750 A2 front sight base? Would drilling the .625 front sight base out to .750 work? I have never had to drill taper pins into the barrel, how do I go about this? Can you use an A2 front sight base with A2 sights with an A1 receiver and sights? What about lengths of the barrel, does it have to be 20" with the front sight base installed at the standard rifle length gas position for the sights to be properly aligned? Or can I have a 16"barrel with carbine length system? I think thats about all the questions I have for now. Thanks ahead of time! |

Let's see. First welcome to retroland! Right now any barrels are gonna be hard to come buy and amount of coins spent will more than likely dictate availability. I'm guessing you're getting 4 or 5 A-1 upper receivers? Sight height should be same for A-1 or A-2 rifle or carbine. Besides barrel diameter only difference in FSB is sight post and forge marks. Raised FSB F marked was a flat top carbine system agenda. Wouldn't worry too much about sights as I've never personally had much problem in this area and a longer sight post will cure if problem arises using a flat top receiver which you are not. . A-1 round sight post with 5 adjustments and A-2 square post with 4 adjustments without going into too much detail. Both will get you where you need to be accurately.
Until you decide on which barrel kinda hard to gather the small parts unless you possibly want spares. For drilling a barrel for FSB installation the ease would kinda depend on your machining skills and equipment access. Correct would be with a jig, approximately $150 if store bought. It can be done without a jig but if it's off the sights are gonna be off. Won't usually matter much until one starts shooting a little distance. Patience is key to retro and parts gathering unless you just want to throw coins at the hobby. In retroland the authenticity of the build and attention to parts detail is probably one of the main objectives. With that said build what you want with what is available, shoot it and have fun. You can always swap out later if and when it starts to bother you or you find the correct pieces. Many here swap parts as they gather for correct build. Sell the old part or build another weapon and install the new part. Vicious circle in our AR hobby. Good luck. |

For the time being though depending on parts availability I am going to do a 7.62x39, with a Colt A1 upper and wherever I can find a 7.62x39 with an A2 sight post or maybe install an A2 sight post myself. I'm thinking about samson handguards for the handguard and an A1 flash hider. Also thinking about rocking one of them AR-47 lowers because there is plenty of 7.62 ammo and mags up this way, but absolutley no more .223 or 5.56 ammo or mags! Now I am on the search for the parts to build an A1 upper! Thanks for the info. I do have some more questions though as pertaining to be as correct as possible. Is there certain markings and symbols I should be looking for? Is it frowned upon to get an A1 look alike barrel in 1/7, 1/8 or 1/9 twist in the retro community? Thanks for all the help! |

I just built a 7.62x39 for same reasons. I did use a flat top, low profile block and free float tube only because my barrel didn't have a FSB and I had the spare parts virtually pennies spent. Have yet to shoot it. Waiting for mess to calm down and buy an optic. Have plenty of ammo, dies, powder, bullets and brass. Definately thought about doing it retro carbine style and still may. I have gathered all the pieces.
Is it frowned upon to get an A1 look alike barrel in 1/7, 1/8 or 1/9 twist in the retro community? I think anything you do concerning a retro barrel today is strictly your business and doubt seriously if any would care or it even matters if they did. It's gonna be yours, build it to your needs. When someone else is footing the bill build to there needs. Just because it's wearing a dress doesn't mean it's a lady underneath. 1-12 or 1-14 is fine for light bullets and a Koolaid / retro big coin wall hanger but they were replaced for more than one reason and lack of bullet versatility was one of them. Best advice is buy every twist rate since your are gonna have a few different uppers. Many times I buy two barrels, build two identical, keep the best shooter and sell the other to help reduce my total investment. |
