I am having problems...

1st round fires fine, bolt strips new round but does not reset hammer.

Any ideas on maintenance to fix this issue??

I don't have a manual and have cleaned 261 but have not broken it down yet.

Thanks, FH

Manual can be found online, use google.

No insight into your problem however.

Try different ammo. I have the same problem with mine if I use Federal bulk. Remington bulk works fine. Go figure, with most people it is the other way around. Federal works fine but not the Remington. Just have to feed the kit what ammo it likes.

Be aware that the 261 likes to run quite well lubed, and don't forget the recoil spring and its guide rod. Mine will do the same as yours if it's dry. Oiled up, it runs like a top.

Thanks - I will try this next range session - any advice on lube?  CLP OK??

I like Rem Oil, but have also used CLP with complete success.

Be advised that after some shooting, your bolt and upper receiver will look like they have used motor oil in them (very black oil). This is normal. Annoying, but a small price to pay for the fun and coolness of a good-running .22 conversion.

I use CLP and run the kit pretty wet.

I've had excellent results with the cheapo Rem Gold Bullets.

Try them and see if the problem persists.

If it does, try polishing the guide rails and insure it reciprocates smoothly.

If the kit seems smooth, you *might* have an overly stiff spring on the kit or on your hammer.

Remington Golden Bullets are QUITE peppy, and will run some of my guns that no other ammo will. Plus, they're accurate in my 1:12 barrels. Plus, they're cheap at Walmart.

They can also be good for breaking in a stiff or new gun or action. Last year I bought a .22 P.38 unit that would ONLY run with them for the first 1000 rounds. Now that it's broken in and the springs are loosened up a hair, that gun works fine with Federal Walmart Bulks, which are even cleaner and cheaper.

I am using the Rem Subsonics due to suppressor use and I bet that is a big part of the problem!  I will try standard and high velocity and see if that cleans it up.

Has anyone tried reducing the spring for use w/subsonics???

Thanks for all the great advice!

I would reduce the hammer spring strength before cutting the recoil spring.  A stout recoil spring is needed to strip the top round off of the mag, carom it off of the feed ramp, and jam it into a dirty chamber.

Reassemble your hammer spring with one leg over the trigger pin and one leg under.  Or order a $4 Brownell's reduced power hammer spring.

Good advice.

I find that subsonics don't cycle most semi-autos reliably without modifications.

This may sound odd, but you might try a different "host" magazine.
Some of my mags that work fine with .223 don't work with the 261 mag inserted.

Low mass hammer combined with a lower power spring, like the JP Enterprises combo, may be a nice combination without sacrificing ignition reliability.
