Ok,
Guys.  So, I've decided that I need to get a M4 clone for the end of the ban.  Initially I was thinking of getting one on Sept 14th, BUT instead, I'm thinking of getting a M4 clone sooner (no wait, which is inevitible) and just "converting" (more like liberating) it after the AWB expires.  Now, I've searched the site and looked at the similar post further down this page.  Here are some questions.

1.  Do the other makers (RRA, Bushy) have the M4 feedramp cuts or is Colt the only one?  Are they really necessary?  If they are absolutely necessary, is it expensive to have done?

2.  I see that Bushy and Colt both use 4150 barrel steel while the RRA uses 4140.  What is the difference and since they're chrome lined, does it really make a difference anyway?

3.  If I get an RRA (I already have a Holliger/RRA DCM rifle) or Bushy is it easier to just replace a "full" stock or have a pinned CAR stock "unpinned"?

4.  I assume the 1:9 twist is still the "standard"?  What is the twist on the issue M4?

5.  Are the Colt M4's still proprietary as far as parts are concerned, or can you swap USGI parts in 'em like the Bushy and RRA?

6.  Will the Bushy or RRA muzzle breaks be easy to retrofit with flash hiders once the ban is over?

7.  What is the difference between the RRA's Wylde chamber and the 5.56 chamber.  Any pro's or con's?

As you can prolly tell, I'm considering mainly the Bushy or the RRA.  This is NOT a BM/RRA peeing contest, I just want to know what all your experiences are.  The Colt just seems too pricey and I don't like the "big hole" thing.  Should I also consider a "Pete in NH" build?  What are things to look for?

thanks guys

I have been very impressed with the NEW LMT Brand M4 uppers.  Fit - finish - Excellent!

I sold my preban bushy upper after I tried the LMT.
chrome bore and chamber
5.56 NATO chamber
T-markings on flat top - colored white
M4 feed ramps,
true M4 profile under handguards
4150 steel barrel
USGI 1/7 twist
chrome lined bolt carrier group with heavier profile (still AR15 semi auto type)

and when taking it to the range, while sighting it in....
I used a ARMS #40 and GGG MAD back up iron sights, and a Colt carbine carry handle.  (All Milspec height)
Much to my surprise, it zeroed PERFECTLY... without replacing the front sight post with a taller one.
That would lead me to believe, the the LMT M4 front sight base is the proper milspec height on a carbine (to my knowledge - only Colt offers taller front sight bases -proper height) on their flat top carbines.

I really can't see any differences between the LMT Brand Name M4 Uppers and a USGI M4 upper.
I was very impressed.

They are priced like a Bushmaster and less than a Colt.

hope this info helps.
just my $.02

thanks!

Trumpet,
I haveve had the opportunity to shoot one of the LMT M4 Clone Uppers from Bravo Co and to say that it is an excellent product would be an understatement.  It actually fits a Colt lower reciever better than the Colt uppers, this really doesn't matter for function for the most part it just makes the rifle feel more solid.  The finish is just as dark as what some are calling SOCOM black on the new Colts, it is just less reflective than Colt's finish.  I have owned a Bushy M4 clone upper before (not anymore) and it paled in comparison to the LMT.  I was very impressed with the upper from LMT and the having dealt with Bravo Co. on other products in the past would recommend them to anyone.  If you have more Qs just hit them with some email and I'm sure they will do their best to help you out.
As far as accuracey goes it connected four out of five rounds for me at 50yds with the other a whisker's width away, and that was even with my horrible shooting abilities and iron sights.
I found the sight tower to be just as Bravo Co. described it was the perfect height to work with a Colt removeable carry handle from an M4.  Hope this helped.

Those are some sa-weeeeet uppers.  Now, since I own a post ban rifle, is it a no-no [nono] to even own a pre-ban upper even if I don't mount it?  Is there a way to mount a muzzle break on it that will be legal and easy to retrofit once the ban expires?  So far, I'm really liking the look of 'em.

Either that or does anyone wanna sell me a new preban lower cheap? [ROFL]

no. as far as I know, there is no "constructive intent" as far as the AWB goes (NFA weapons is a different story).

No one has really even been charged with outright violating the AWB, at lwast not as a stand alone charge.

The ATF has alot more important things to do than bother people for stupid shit like that bothering people for what muzzle device or stock they put on an AR-15

If you were illegally dealing guns across state lines, and you also had an illegal AW.. then yea you'd probably be charged with it along with your other charges.

Trumpet,

I think JeffersonDarcy is right.

Hopefully, come Sept the entire issue will be mute.

Thanks guys,
I have since talked to "Pete in NH" and decided I'ma going to go with the RRA.  I'm not a high speed operator (hell, I'm not even a low speed operator), so I don't need the "extra" of the LMT.  Initially I was all geeked over having the 1:7 twist "just like the real M4", BUT I realized I wasn't going to be shooting the new 77grain stuff or tracers, so I'd be fine with the 1:9.  Plus I'm pretty confident that if I get a "pre-ban" upper now, I can get a RRA "No ban" lower later, they'll fit pretty darn well.

Since I haven't heard any arguments about the RRA's 4140 barrel steel, I assume it doesn't really matter since it's chrome lined anyway?

Now my big questions are these....
If I go with a rail type system, I assume (and yes, I know what happens when one ASS-U-Me's) that I really wouldnt' need the RRA's Tactical Entry detatchable rail, rear sight thingie right?  If I mount an optic, as much as I'd like a TA01NSN, I'll end up with either an Aimpoint or an EOTech.  Now as far as rail systems go, I'm totally new to this.  Which one is the best bet FOR THE MONEY?  ARMS?  Knight's? Daniel Defense?  Then which model?  There's so damn much and I figure I'd only be mounting the EOTech/Aimpoint and maybe a vertical grip.

I figure I was thinking of having Pete build me up a pre-ban with 16" chrome lined M4 barrel, Baer bolt and carrier group,LMT BUIS, VLTOR stock (or RRA 6 position, haven't decided yet), but I'm not sure which rail system or flash-hider to go with.  Recommendations?

Thanks again
