Hi,

So I've decided that I want to build my next AR15 upper and lower, not just buy a pre-built upper.

My question is, what are the chances generally of the M4 ramps being misaligned or misshaped on the receiver in relation to the barrel extension?

I am not too worried about sizing so long as the extension is wider than the receiver's ramp.  The barrel in question would be a DS Arms 14.5" barrel, and the receiver will be either from Damage USA or Stag Arms.  The reason being is the Damage USA and Stag Arms upper receivers match closer to the anodizing on RRA lowers than DS Arms, which is more of a satin black than a matte black.

I realize it may be cheaper just buying a 14.5" upper from DS Arms but I really would like the sense of accomplishment knowing that I put it together.

I have seen stuff that aligns, and stuff that doesn't.  Unless it is extreme, it doesn't matter.  The chances are 50/50.  Basically nothing to worry about.

Stick with well known quality components and you will not have any problems.

They normally line up fairly well.  Any mis-alignment is usually a slight jump from the uppers ramps to the barrels ramps.  If you want to make it closer you can use one of the lapping tools to adjust the fit closer.

They will almost always work just fine.

Right now I have an M16 ramped barrel on an M4 upper.  It shoots great - because the bullet never gets low enough to impact the uppers feed ramps/snag under the barrels feed ramps.  It's not "correct" but it does work.  I'll get it swapped pretty soon though.  I've got another barrel with M4 feed ramps on a no ramp upper, so hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll get some time to swap them around.

Kvjavs, what type of hand guard are you thinking about using for this upper build?  And if you are looking at the same DS barrel as I am, know that it doesn't have a Delta ring assembly or a pinned muzzle device so just know going in that you are going to be adding to it.
DS 14.5"

May want to consider a Voodoo 14.5" barrel that comes with the pinned Manimal Flash Hider that allows a gas block to pass over it and is likely a better barrel.  That helps keeping your options open if you want to change something in the future with a lot less hassle.
Voodoo

Chances are slim for poor alignment if you use quality parts, but it does happen.

I have budget parts, a thunderguns upper and classicfirearms barrel. They line up perfect. I think the most important thing is to make sure the parts you buy have the right cuts. Pic here for compatibility.

Thanks for the reply everyone.

As for LastRites, that's the barrel I'm going to be using. I already have a delta ring assembly, and I have a gunsmith that'll do the pin and weld for me with a BCM A2X.
