Can someone clarify for me please.  Are the mentioned cuts in the upper and barrel extension of an M4 just deeper than they would be normally in a regular rifle.  Is this to improve feeding?  Was there a problem before?

I looked at mine and the 2 cuts in the barrel extension do not seem as deep as the ones I have seem pictured before on the M4s

Thanks.

The problem is that on full auto the last couple rounds tend to cavitate (which could lead to a jam). So the M4 feed ramps were introduced to help with this issue. Not running full auto? Don't sweat it....

OK, but doesn't answer the question - What's the physical difference between the M4  feed ramps and earlier versions?

yes, I have my dumb hat on tonight:
cavitate I looked it up..
transitive verb
fill something with cavities: to form bubbles or cavities in a substance

I'm guessing the spent shells fills the deeper grooves up with residue? or gunk? and instead of slidding into the chamber, it bounces around? and why only the last couple rounds? less spring pressure from mag?

when i mention to my buddies and show off what there M4 has and my non M4 doesn't have, they are going to ask me this.

I'm trying to learn,, one thread at a time....

EDIT:
wow, when i read this the first time there was only one reply.. and 4 beat me to posting.. that is fast.. slow Sat night for alot of people?? LOL..
I remember that thread, someone posted.
