I have a bushmaster XM15-E2S, the serial is L2xxxxx. If I choose to put a flat top upper on it does it really matter whether or not the new upper has M4 feed rails or not?

Thanks

M4 feed ramps are issues when you're talking about mating the upper receiver to the barrel.  If you're swapping your upper for a different complete one, then you have nothing to worry about.  If you're taking off the barrel and swapping out the stripped upper for another, then you may want to check.  However, most "carbine" uppers and barrels have M4 feed ramps.  It's usually the retro and rifle-length barrels that don't.  I don't think you'd have any issues, just make sure it all matches like below.

Essentially the M4 feed ramps were for the faster cycling rate of the M4 compared to the M16 at full auto. Is it necessary no, but it makes manufacturing easier if they are standard.
