| i just got my new M4 and it has oblong shaped handguards?...i had another in my hands about a month or so ago and it seems that i remember the guards being just round...i liked the feel of them,...but mine being oval or oblonged...kinda dont feel right,?? am i imagining this ??...or is this a new style??...it is a cierro upper |

The oblong handguards you describe are correct "M4" handguards. The round ones are CAR handguards. For example, a 6920 will have M4 handguards while Bushmaster M4type rifles come with CAR handguards. I believe the extra gerth is to accommodate the dual heatshields but I may be incorrect. Scott |

Many non-Colt rifles come with single shielded M4 handguards. While they retain the same exterior profile as the dual shielded Colt handguards many of them lack the second heatshield. For most people the lack of the second heatshield is a non-issue, since most shooters won't maintain the rate of fire necessary to make the handguards too hot to touch anyway.
