besides the coolness factor and weight savings, what are the other benifits/disadvantages of the M4 profile vs. the heavy barrel?

Weight savings.
Handling characteristics - swinging on targets.

M4 heats up faster than a HBAR but it also cools faster (doesn't really matter on a semi auto AR).  You can mount a 203 on it.  An HBAR might be more accurate but you will never know the difference in a carbine.  I prefer the M4 profile in a 14.5" too.  The 16" just seems really long after mounting a FS on it and a bayonet works on a 14.5".

The best benefit I like is that it's VERY balanced compared to a front heavy 16" HBAR carbine barrel (which is actually heavier than a Gov't profile 20" A2 barrel).

m4 will resale better if  that matters. I have a 14.5 m4 and a 16 m4 and a 16 hbar. like was said m4 does heat up under full auto or bumping but in semi it about the same. from what is have seen the hbar does not group any better. but that is going the vary by barrel
