I've recently been looking a picking up an AR15 M4.  I recently noticed one M4 that was complete Colt product.  The other was A Colt Hbar sporter lower (preban) with a M4 upper by FN with flutid shaw Barrel and Bayo lug.  Can anyone shed any light on the situation?

I may have answered my own question by reviewing some previous discussions in the archives on Fabrique Nationale.  According to Jack Burton the FN upper is "Garbage."  Apparently "the reciever will not allow the front sight and barrel to line up on any other lower."  Who would have known?  Thank goodness for the AR-15 library.

Only Colt makes a M4 upper receiver... anything you find other then Colt is just a receiver with a M4 barrel on it.

If the receiver is marked M or M4 and has the longer feed ramps it is a Colt M4 upper receiver.

By the way, I highly doubt a true FN upper would be garbage...

1. FN does not sell their products to anyone but the US government.  Most parts advertised as "FN" are really generic parts.

2. FN does not make flattop uppers.  Their contracts are for the M16A2 and M16A3, both of which use "A2"-style carry-handle uppers.
