Currently, I own one complete AR and one mostly complete AR lower. The complete AR is an M4gery that is pretty basic. It has backup iron sights and an EOTech. I do plan to add a tactical light, but haven't done it yet. The lower is for my next build and I'm struggling with what to build. After the parts that I just ordered arrive, it will be a part for part identical clone to the lower on my first AR except for the stock which I haven't bought yet. I am not military or LEO or private security or anything like that. These rifles are being built because I enjoy building them, enjoy shooting them and who knows if the day will come that due to social or economic collapse or zombie hordes that they will be needed for self defense. I do shoot IDPA and have some interest in trying a 3 gun competition so they may get used for that.
Option #1: Build a clone to my current M4gery. This way if I ever have to use the main gun and it goes down, the backup is no different. Also, in a SHTF situation, I have a clone of my gun to hand my wife. Option #2: Build a super-cool tactical Recce Rifle. I love the look of these types of AR's and they seem like they could be a lot of fun. They also seem to me that they would be a better option in a 3 gun match. However, the Recce upper is nearly double the price of the M4 upper and if I went that far, I'd probably want to go all out with a UBR stock and an ACOG so the price could go WAY up. I do not have much money, but this is a gun I'm building a few parts at a time so I could "afford" any of them, but option 1 would probably be done by late summer while option 2 could take about 2 years to complete. What would you guys/gals do in my situation? As a side note, if I go with option 1, I will probably end up building a 3rd AR down the road that is a piston system or just save up to buy a complete rifle like the new ones from Ruger or Sig. |

Build the Recce.
I don't see any point in having a bunch of identical rifles. The handling differences aren't great enough that you're going to be screwed up moving between guns. An M4gery with an Aimpoint would be perfectly complemented by something like an 18" Recce with a TA-11, IMNSHO. Use whichever one most fits your situation and give the other to someone else for backup. |
Just for some added detail... here is my M4gery...
