Do all M855 ammo come w/ a green tip? What gives it the green color, is it just paint? I've never
seen one in person, so just curious. Thanks! |

Green paint gives it the color. Nothing special. The only reason it is green tipped is so that in US service you can tell the difference between the M193 55gr round and the M855 62gr round. When fielded both were then and still are in service. As most other countries did not use the M193 type round they make make a M855 clone called the SS109 loading without the paint as they did not need the painted tips as they only had one 5.56mm load in service.

The reason we painted them green was because at one point our armed forces were using both the older M-16(which had a 1/12 twist barrel)and shot the m193 55gr round. The newer A2's(which had a 1/7 twist) used the m855. The older weapons couldn't stabalize the heavier and longer 62gr green tip so the Army painted the tips green for easy ID.
Now,you CAN shoot the m855 out of those older weapons in an emergency but they won't be accurate for crap. The mil always makes things easier with color codes: green tip: m855 red tip: tracer black tip: Armor piercing Hope this helps. |
