| I tried to find this info in a FAQ somewhere and did a search. But is it not up for sale?? I thought I had seen it for sale on a web site once about 8 months ago but I'm proably mistaken. |
Are you talking about M855? Steel core 62gr? www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m855.htm OR M995? I don't think this will be available anytime soon. www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m993.htm |

There was some bosnian "hot shot" or something like that coming into the country with a black tip. Nothing more than 62grn SS109 type bullets and comparable to M855 ammo. M995 will be scarce as hens teeth for some time to come, it's hard to come by even in the military from most accounts. If you saw something like that AWFUL RIP OFF JUNK MAGAZINE "FIREQUEST" advertising "ARMOUR PIERCING AMMO", ignore it as it's nothing more than M855 that they are trying to RIP YOU OF OVER! |
| Newly manufactured armor piercing ammo is no longer available to the public. You can still buy bullets if you can find some made prior to this practice being put into place. But to my knowledge, none of the M995 component bullets have been sold. All I've seen is the AP bullets taken from old .30 caliber military ammo. And even these seemed to have dried up. |
Well, short of finding a deployed SAW gunner who manages to get some and steals a few rounds, that's correct. M995 costs about $2 per round to produce, and is only available on SAW belts, and only as a special-order item for deployed forces. Most SAW gunners have never seen the stuff, because it is rarely used outside of SpecOps. There is no "surplus", and it will likely never be sold as such. In 30 years, there may be a tiny number of pulled components available, but I wouldn't hold your breath. -Troy |
30-06 ball and AP are 2 totally different animals. There is some M2 ball with a mild steel jacket floating around (the current stuff the CMP is selling), but it still has a lead core. The AP stuff with the tungsten(?) core has to be demilled and sold as components. There are still unopened spam cans to be had tho from before the ban. |
.30-06 M2 AP ammo uses bullets with hardened steel cores. The use of tungsten in AP rifle bullets is a relatively recent development, and likely wasn't very possible during the years that .30-06 was issued due to the lack of tungsten in the US (we buy most of it from Russia). -Troy |
| i carried a saw for a year...never saw it. the only time i ever saw it was in the hands of some rangers. while jaw jacking and swapping stories i snapped a round off an unloaded belt. i sent it downrange long ago but for $1 ill let you look at the glove i held it with. |

.30 M2 Ball is, you guessed it, ball ammo. This ammunition is almost exclusively copper washed steel jacketed. Your magnet will stick to it. .30 M2 AP is -- wait for it! -- armor piercing. .30-06 Ball hasn't been made since WW1 and was superseded by .30 M1 Ball which was too hot so .30 M2 Ball was created. .30 M2 Ball is essentially a recreation of the original .30-06 Ball. -- Chuck |
