| I'm in a dilemma. Not to worried about the cost, obviuosly the billets going to be more but I am planning on doing a lighter AR build. Want around a 6-6.5 pound rifle unloaded. It's going to have a 14.5" pencil barrel. I am undecided on getting the MEGA forged receivers or the billet set. I really like the looks of the billet but know the forged has a LITTLE weight savings. Any thoughts? |
All my lowers are forged and I can't think of any functional reason to buy a billet receiver other then "just because" 
In your case, with you wanting to keep the weight down the forged lower is the only way to go IMO. The nice thing here is Mega's forged lowers look damn near as nice as other companies billet receivers! |

I am working on finishing up a build and review of a Mega Lower, Mega Monolythic Upper, Black Hole Weaponry heavy straight profile barrel, Ace Ultralight stock and the build has come in at 6.45lbs. Pretty impressive considering the barrel weight.

In your case, with you wanting to keep the weight down the forged lower is the only way to go IMO. The nice thing here is Mega's forged lowers look damn near as nice as other companies billet receivers! This, I have a billet I did for a target rifle build. But the forged lowers Ive used for the rest are great. You cant go wrong, and with the forged you can put your own trigger guard in that is lower in weight. |

I'm split... It depends on the rest of your planned set up.
The billet lower is only 0.2 oz heavier than the forged. While the billet upper is 9.4 oz and the forged is 6.9, those 2.5 of weight savings can easily be nullified by what rail/handguard system you choose. For example, if you go with the Mega Mono quad rail upper, it is 20 oz. If you go with the forged upper (6.9 oz) and a Samson Mfg. Midlength rail (15.3), you are at roughly 22.2 oz. If you go with the forged upper (6.9 oz) and a Daniel Defense Midlength (12.5), you are at roughly 18.4 oz. I have the billet mono quad rail upper and billet lower, and their fit/finish is superb. If your planned set up w/ the forged receivers ends up being 4 or 5 oz lighter than the billet mono upper/lower combo, hands down, I'd go w/ the forged. Also, if you want an upper that you can switch out the front rail later, I'd probably go with the forged. If the weight is the same or lighter for the Mega billet mono upper/lower, I'd probably go w/ it. |

Any thoughts? ok, so the mega billet upper is quite a bit heavier than the mega forged upper. The same is NOT true for the lowers. The billet and forged lowers are pretty close in weight. What i did was buy a forged upper and then their GTR 3S billet lower which matches their forged upper. I think this was a pretty good compromise for weight. i went w/ a DD 14.5 pencil and then a troy alpha 13". I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out but i haven't weighed it yet. I will say it handles substantially different than my 16" mid profile rifle. |

Both are great, the billet looks good and the forged is stronger (from what I have read). If you go with the billet lower you may want the matching Mega billet upper.
I own this setup and it is great with the exception that some hand guards will not fit the Mega billet upper. I was unable to use my LaRue or Troy TRX extreme hand guards. The Daniel Defense lite rail works well. |
