How does the MI free-float rail system attach to the upper?  Reason I ask is that all the instructions I'm finding talk about how to mount it on an existing upper without removing the bbl, etc, but I'm building an upper from the group up and need to know what typical upper parts I'll need to fasten it.

Thanks!

I'll just post what's written where these are purchased:

www.midwestindustriesinc.com/ar_free_float_forearms.htm

"No removal of barrel or front sight for installation. Simply cut off the delta ring for a easy install."

As noted they attach to the barrel nut directly and rather securely I might add (I have 2 MI FF rails on rifles).

If your building from a previously assembled barrel, follow these instructions for removing the snap ring, spring and delta ring. If your ordering individual parts then simply do not order the three aforementioned parts. The barrel will be installed with out them, torqued as usual, and then the MI FF HG’s installed over the barrel nut IAW the mfgrs instructions.

If you are assembling the upper by yourself, you will need to install a barrel nut. The MI rails clamp to the existing barrel nut, so you will need to buy one if you don't have one already. You can skip the delta ring and all of the associated springs.
