It seems everyone has an M2, but since I have no NODs of the sort, what is the purpose of having 4 settings you can't use? Is it just for authenticity, like "my weapon is almost exactly what the Army uses" or do that many people have night vision?

An ML2 is perfect for the needs of someone who wants an accurate, reliable red-dot that has no night vision, correct?

Yes, it is as easy as that.  No plans for NV?  Get the ML2/ML3 and save a few bucks.  NV a possibility in your future?  Go with the M2/M3.

Because of the NV capability of the M2 and M3, the first 3 settings on the brightness knob are not visible with the naked eye. So to turn it on, you have to click over 4 clicks before you can see anything. I wish they would have put the NV settings on the other end of the settings.

They are assuming that the NV wearer will be viewing through while turning it on, hence the first 3 settings.  You might get dazzled otherwise I think.
