I just built my first AR and took it to the range today. After the first shot I had to switch the safety on then off in order to fire the second. That cleared up after about a dozen rounds. Than I noticed that after the last shot the bolt would stick in the buffer tube. I attribute the second shot problem to tightness but can't figure out the bolt problem. Can anybody give some advice? Scary thing these AR's are. Had those problems and the 5 shot group under a quarter have me hooked. I will post pics after I figure out how.
Thanks to all in advance

If you mean after the last round in the mag was fired, that your bolt locked back....then that is the normal operation. It lets you know that your mag is empty and you need to reload. Once you reload you hit the bolt release button and it loads a round into the chamber.

Ok, cause your a noob and this might be a dumb question I have to state the obvious...on your last shot of the magazine the bolt is SUPPOSED to stay back in the buffer tube, it's the last shot.

You need to push in the bolt catch on the left side of the lower receiver (when pointing the gun away from you, as you always should).  Push in the little lever style button and the bolt slams forward (reloading a fresh round out of a fresh magazine).  The point of this function is to make re-loading the firearm easier (and it feels awesome doing it).

If you need more help, watch this guy hitting the bolt catch when he puts in a new magazine.

The bolt locking back is normal and happens after you fire the last round out of every mag (or at least it should happen).  To get the bolt to go back forward, either drop the mag out of the magwell (magwell should be empty) and pull the charging handle backuntil it makes contact with the bolt and pull it back the last little bit (this will disengage the bolt catch).  Or push the bolt catch release, it's the thing circled in red below.  You need to push the top half of it in towards the gun body and it will take more than a light push to do it.

ETA: Disclaimer - This is not my gun or my picture.  The picture is off the picture of your gun thread stickied at the top of this forum.  So thank you letting me borrow it for an explanation, whoever the owner of this picture/gun is.

Holy Shit I fell like an idiot. I mostly shoot handguns and shotguns, When it locked back I tried the charging handle like I would with a pistol. Can some one now tell me how to delete this thread so that I can limit my embarrsement?

The only way you can redeem yourself is to post a pic of your evil black rifle...

Don't worry about it being a noob question.  Everyone has them, some people just luck out and they're not very visable.  Besides maybe in about 4 months this will finally make it to the archives never to be seen again...

as for the first problem, you probably had a bur on the disconnecter or hammer, and it smoothed itself out, but keep an eye on it, just to be safe

Hope that works for you.

BTW the charging handle WILL release the bolt when it's locked back.  You just have to pull the charging handle ALL the way to the rear.

Edit the thread title to "Mods Please Delete."

There's no shame in not knowing something, but make sure you read the owner's manual next time BEFORE you go to the range.

That's what I was thinking. Looks a bit difficult to reach the charging handle.

That said, don't worry about dumb questions. Better to get answers to them here, than have problems on the range.

Welcome to the club and nice shooting!

I liked the question, too.

Reminded my of my first AR shoot in 1979... I'll bet that we all were wondering 'where the bolt went' at one point in our shooting careers... Hopefully, early on.
