Does the M261 22 conversion unit require the gas tube? I have a old AR 16" beater barrel I would like to install on an A2 upper and just use as a 22 dedicated upper, hence the question.

No, I'm pretty sure it doesn't (I'll find out for sure when mine comes in next week).  But I've read that you should put something into the hole in the front sight base to keep gases and fouling from spurting out.  On a dedicated upper, some people cut the gas tube and insert it upside down into the FSB.

lobogris,
No, the M261 does not require a gas tube -- it is strictly a blow-back operated device like the Ciener conversion unit.

Yep.  Just a blowback.  The only concern is to shoot some regular .223 rounds every few-hundred .22's to keep the gas system clear.  There was a post on here somewhere that referenced a military manual in that regard.
