I realize that Colt invented the 9mm AR, but by now are their mag blocks still the best? Would it be worth having the two piece Colt block pinned into my SBR lower? The idea of doing it doesn't bother me if they are the best block.

Best is "subjective". A lot depends on what mags you want to use.
If you intend to use quality colt/metalform or modded Uzi mags, you can pretty much use any "metal" block you want. If you want to use some of the cheap mag offerings out there, you may want to consider a rra/spikes bottom loader for the adjustment factor they offer. Another thing some people consider is that they are buying a $200 stamp for that SBR lower and they may want to use it for other calibers - it is much easier to swap in/out a bottom loading rra/spikes block and get some extra mileage out of that SBR lower. |
| I think that Mag Blocks are becoming a thing of the past. Now that companies are producing lowers that are dedicated to the 9mm magazine, all the fiddeling around getting it to work is coming to an end. In a decade or so, when someone from Colt goes to SHOT or looks at their competation, maybe they'll start doing it as well. |
| I still prefer the flexibility of the mag block on a standard lower. If I ever want to share uppers on my 9mm lower all i've got to do is pull out my Hahn toploader and change the 9mm buffer and I'm good to go. I also run magwell grips on all my lowers, can't do that on a dedicated 9mm lower. |

I also loaned it to some peeps who wanted to try it on their lowers before making a purchase. I also agree that down the road many more manufactures will offer a dedicated lower for the 9mm , 40 cal, 45 acp etc. |

My Colt AR6450 works perfectly, and as mag blocks go, when installed correctly (like at the factory) it is GTG. However, installing one in your SBR lower would be a pretty permanent modification. As such, it might make more sense to buy a dedicated 9mm lower, CMMG, DDLES, RRA, etc., and just pay the $200 and wait the 6-8 months to SBR it. That is what I did, back in January I submitted two form 1s, one for a 9mm and the other for a 5.56. Hopefully I am nearing the end of the wait.
