A buddy has a new AR that is very difficult to get the mag to latch in. You have to push hard to get it to latch if the bolt carrier is forward. It works fine if the bolt is locked to the rear. We've tried switching to another mag catch and tried filing a little off of the one that came in it. We also tried switching BCG's and uppers. Nothing seems to make any difference. Any ideas? |

First off i'll as a few questions... what mags have you tried? What BCG are you running? Pic or description of the mag catch button side...Is the screw in the middle sticking out or flush or recessed into the button? Lastly, If you smack in the mag on a closed bolt does it stay...Or does it just take a bit more smack to get it in. Inserting any mag on a closed bolt takes a bit of a hit. If my hand doesn't get just a bit of a sting then I'm NOT properly inserting the mag. Hit it HARD! REALLY! Service rifles take a bit of a slam...and any mag with decent springs will take a bit to get in there too... remember on a closed bolt you depressing the mag spring and shells down in the mag about 1/4-3/8" and the friction to open the mag catch as well as any friction in the mag well area too... If it goes in with a hit...GOOD! A hard hit is a subjective thing... Bret |

All worked perfectly in other rifles. We've tried the BCG that came with it (DPMS) and a Stag BCG. We tried loosening and tightening the mag catch from very loose to as tight as you can get it. It takes a serious hit or just a lot of pressure to make it latch. I know it's usually harder with the bolt closed, but this is a whole new level of difficulty. |

Trying all those mags and bcg's The only tolerance that I can think of would be in the lower... Measure from bottom of bolt catch to top of lower receiver...or the start of the upper... If its out of spec...get it back to mfg... If it measures the Same as other lowers...did you change out the mag catch itself...? I wish you were local I'd say stop by...it's difficult to write how things should feel in a text message ... Maybe someone in your area may chime in and lay another set of eyes on things... I found wierd stuff on weapons...I had a factory upper with a huge gas port in it...got fixed...but how that got out the door was unknown... Try those. Measurements and comparisons to your at and see what you come up with... If something is off you'll find it... Bret |

Under stress, slamming the mag home doesn't always happen and the -2 provides some room for error. Pmags usually end up with 29 rounds, GI with 28. |

Load all mags to 28 rounds.
Beer can grip. Push the mag in the well firmly. Pull on the mag out to check the mag latch seating. Do not hit or tap the mag in. When training, push pull whether the bolt is closed or not. When the bolt is locked open, the mag will eventually spit rounds into the upper when hit. The "tap, rack, bang" will spill rounds into the upper even easier when the mag is only half full because of less mag spring pressure on the rounds. Push pull every time. Mic the top of the mag catch cutout to the top of the lower. Compare to a proper functioning lower. It might be out of spec but is less likely. Count the rounds going in. Make sure you're only putting in 28. |
