Do you have several different brands of magazines?
Perfect. I found that magazine brands (insofar as different designs) behave differently when I monopod off the magazine. I would like to see if you gentlemen can conduct a little test. Take out one of each brand of mag you own. 1) Remove the spring and follower. 2) Insert into a cleared weapon and apply pressure to the magazine as if it were being used as a monopod. 3) Work the bolt a few times. Did you feel any resistance? I.E. did the feed lips scrape or make contact with the bolt? Which magazines, if ANY, scrapped the bottom of the bolt carrier while monopoding? Variables: Magazine popularity. Everyone has PMAGS or USGI... but not everyone has ARC or Tapco stuff. This will be a variable as their might be little to no data on some magazines vs others. Rifles: Each rifle can be unique in some ways. Of my two rifles, one can monopod with two magazine combinations without resistance. The other rifle, using those same magazines, can only monopod on one brand without encountering resistance. I would estimate that the tolerances of the magazine well, and the magazine catch cutout could all play a part in a mag touching the feedlips to the bolt. Take note if your magazine catch has play... the rifle where the feedlips encounter on 2 of 3 brands of magazines has substantially more play in this area than my other rifle. You can choose multiple answers It would be more helpful if I could conduct multiple polls on one page. |

Don't you mean the bolt carrier? No magazine should touch the bolt.
I may be old school or out of the loop, but I don't monopod with a magazine. Never thought it was a good idea, especially on the AR platform... The rifle was not designed for it. IIRC, the MP-43/44 series did actually have design elements specifically for mono-poding, largely due to the extremely long magazine... 1DD |

I don't have any problem with my USGI, Pmags or Lancers when shooting from the prone, mag on the deck, monopod style. I think you may be doing it wrong because you're not supposed to put alot of pressure/weight on the carbine. I haven't gotten around to shooting my lancers but with the spring and follower removed it gets held up. |

Do you have another rifle to test the same mag in? |

Do you have another rifle to test the same mag in? Yep, even if I just place the weight of the rifle on the mag there is a good bit of friction, and if I put any weight such as push the mag against something or applying any pressure it brings the carrier to a stop. I have another rifle I can check soon, iv'e got another couple of lancers i'll try out as well. Mmmm.. pmags catch hold the carrier back as well, not to the extent of the lancers but they still do. USGI's are too much of a pain in the ass to take apart but my e-landers no matter how much pressure is applied work fine. Never mind, USGI's work as e-landers, troys are too much of a pain to take apart, maybe i'll do it later tonight but. Lancer-Will not let bolt forward Tro-Will not let bolt forward. Minimal bind compared to pmag Pmag (gen2)-Will not let bolt forward. Less bind compared to lancer E-Lander-OK Okay USGI-Ok Wasn't able to try other rifle as it's my friends, maybe tomorrow. Also, I am not slamming the bolt forward, I am using he CH..but I assume the results would be the same. I think my gun is retarded....BCM upper, AIM BCG, Tactical Machining lower..bolt catch too tight/loose? |
