I dismantled my magazines for routine cleaning and noticed that the magazine springs of the older magazines are about 1 1/2 inch shorter than the new ones. How would you know it's time for new magazine springs? I keep my magazines loaded all the time, is that bad for the mags?

You will get FTF issues when the spring is to weak to push rounds up.  These springs will be shorter, as you describe.

Two schools of thought on spring selection.  Some use the ~$7+ aftermarket springs (Wolff, etc.).  I use the ~$1 USGI with the same results.

Loaded or unloaded mags?  Again, two schools of thought.  Both sides will post scientific and/or empirical claims.  For me, spring replacement is a small price to pay for preparedness.  Whether it costs $1 or $7, I'd rather have a full mag instead of empty.

Anybody have a guideline (like a spec) for how long a mag's spring should be?  Some of my mags are really old, but I have no idea if they need new springs or not.

I'd say, "When in doubt...change'm out!" Wolff springs, IMO, are worth the money. But I think as long as your changing them out, regardless of what brand or materials you use, you will probably avoid your FTF. Good luck.

It's not just how long they are.  It's more of a function of how strong they are.   Stainless Steel vs. Chrome Silicone

This same company sells replacement kits for as low as $2.10 per 3 pack.  And you can find SS springs on the EE for ~$12 per 12 pack.

How did they work before you took them apart? I would just give them a tug and stretch them back out.  I would replace them if they broke or failed to push the rounds up into the chamber.

I bought a pack of the red springs from the PHX company and they are tough as hell.  But I don't think the CS springs I bought from Larry will ever wear out either.
