I tried posting this on the "build it yourslef board" and got nothing. Maybe someone here has encountered this or knows a fix:
I'm assembling a lower on an AeroPrecision receiver and having problems with the mag catch and the release button. The catch will not engage any of the mags I have tried ( Colt, P-Mag and a couple of no names ) unless the takedown pin is back and the upper slightly open. Once I close it up and secure the pin I can not depress the mag release and have to open it up again to remove the mag. I have swapped 2 other uppers in with the same results. Also the mag catch will not engage in my work block so I'm pretty sure it's the lower causing my headaches. Anyone run into this before? Anyway to fix it or work around it? I contacted AeroPrecision today so maybe they can offer some insight during the week.

Did you try another magazine catch assembly?

If so, sounds like the lower receiver is mismachined, needs replacement.

What I think you are telling us is:
With upper in place, mags will not latch.
With upper open or off, the mag will catch and the mag release operates normally.
When upper is closed on a latched in mag, the mag release is froze or jammed from pressure from the upper.

I'm assuming this is with the bolt forward.  ?  Have you confirmed all of the above with the bolt held back?

The mag should easily insert and latch with the bolt back.  If it does not and you have force the mag up where it's pushing on the upper rails, then the lower is out of spec.  Send it back.

Yeah......the one I had worked just fine in another lower and the working one from there did not work. Guess I'm SOL here, thanks

Try this.

Look up the front of the mag well and see if the upper receiver lip is protruding into the mag well void and what is blocking the mag from seating home.

Next, strip a mag down to body alone, and try to install it with the bolt closed.  If it will not lock home with the feed lips of the mag tight against the bottom of the bolt, pull the mag catch and while trying again, look through the mag release slot and see just how back the mismatch is.

Also, would help to know the mags you are using, since there are some cheap clones on the market that the feed lips where not formed correctly (too high), and could be the problem at hand.
