Hello,

First off I have a Bushmaster M4 upper flattop, and a Ammetec lower.

I have a USGI 30 round magazine. I cannot get it to insert fully in the rifle when the bolt is closed. However, when I lock it open, it inserts fine. Anyone know why?
Im also new to ARs.

Load 2 less rounds in the magazine and see what happens.

I tried that, even tried 25 rounds. Still wont fit in. Probably a problem with the mag catch.

If its the mag catch, that would probably slow things up before the bolt position ever had a chance to affect anything.

Does it do this will all of your magazines?   What magazines are you using and what condition are they in?

Just the one mag?  If so, try others.

yeah just the one.

I can get it to lock w/ 30 in now, but its hard to release.

Edit: I'll try other mags. I guess the magazine spring is too tight or something with the bolt release.

Load mag to thirty rounds, Insert mag into mag well as far up as you can, then palm slam the bottom of the mag to seat it.  Simple put, the top round has to be pushed down by the bottom of the closed carrier, and shoving the mag in by hand is not enough pressure.

As for the release problem, the magazine  catch point and  the mag catch ledge are still new/sharp, and in time both will break in.

make sure the trigger guard doesn't stick into the mag well and that no part of the upper hangs over the top of the mag well.

Sounds like the mag just needs a little breaking-in.  Take a pencil and cycle the hell out of the follower.

Sounds like the mag just needs a little breaking-in.  Take a pencil and cycle the hell out of the follower about twenty times all the way down, and let the follower snap back up on it's own power.  Once you have completed this, remember to pull the magazine apart and clean all the wood shavings out of the mag

Fixed it for you.

Sounds like the Mag Catch needs to be adjusted if it releases with difficulty. Do a search on Mag Catch adjustment for help.

Could be the the mag catch hole is located a bit low. I've just trashed two new T-65 mags that were at least .040 to low. If this is the problem you could probably keep banging on it until the feed lips fold in allowing it to fit but you'd still end up with trash.

what is the distance from the top of the lower to the top of the mag catch cut?
