| How can you find out if ammo is magnetic? I'm looking to buy some 8mm surplus and wasnt sure if it would detect (my local range doesnt allow magnetic bullets). Thanks again. |
Uhh, with a magnet? I think you mean your range does not allow steel-core ammo. If you can lay hands on it before you by, bring a magnet along. If it sticks to the bullet, steel core. That's how the range will check. |

I have used several different 8mm surplus and the only one that I found that wasnt magnetic is Yugo. Romanian uses a non steel core bullet but the casing is steel so the range I went to would not allow that ammo either. Pretty much any of those old bullets had some steel in them. Turk |

Just what is the reasoning at these restrictive ranges? Are they concerned about AP ammunition? Do they not have dirt berms as backstops? Which is most toxic, lead or steel? I'm not sure what all the concern is about. Perhaps it is because they can recover the lead and sell it where steel is of little value. Semper Fi! |

Steel cased bullets can penetrate a little better than brass cased bullets, but they are indeed more worried about AP bullets. These can damage their bullet traps, the structure of berms, and (worst of all) the drainage systems needed to keep lead from seeping into the ground water. What would be better would be to build ranges with more serious berms that can withstand military style bullets. This isn't technically difficult, but it is expensive, and shooters bitch about how much range fees are already. You pay now, or you pay later, or you can't shoot at all. |
