Well, after numerous questions and a lot of excellent information given, I finally decided on a Sightron for my Sig M400. Was really leaning toward the SIII 3.5-10x44 with mil/mil adjustments. Then I made the mistake of looking at the Sightron SIII 1-7x24 with illuminated reticle.
For all around target shooting for fun, which magnification would be best to go with? Pricing is comparable between the two. If the 1-7x24 would be better, which reticle would be best? Now, here is something that I am considering, if I go with the 3.5-10x44, I would mount it with a LaRue QD mount, or comparable, and then possibly go with an Aimpoint Pro Patrol on another QD mount just for close in shooting. I probably am over analyzing this but when spending the dollars, I want to make sure I do this once. Could I save the cost of the Aimpoint by just going with the 1-7x24? I only plan on shooting out to 300 yards maximum. Thanks for everyone's help and knowledge! It is greatly appreciated. |

Not sure how many ARs you have but I'm guessing it's only 1? If that is the case I would use the money you would spend on an aim point and larue QD mount and buy another AR. The mount is $210 and an aim point is going to cost you $400 + depending on model.....you have over $600 towards another AR and then you can set up a dedicated long range rifle and a shorter range HD rifle.
As far as magnification is concerned, the 1x7 will provide plenty of magnification to do anything out to a couple hundred yards. If you're wanting to shoot prairie dogs or gophers at 400+ yards you will appreciate additional magnification. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Only problem is I would still need some type of optic, eventually, for the second AR. Suppose I could always shoot with the standard sights. Maybe be a good start saving toward a Black Rain! |

I like the idea of buying the second AR with the money. Another thing you might want to check out is the Primary Arms red dots, I run an EOTech EXPS3-0 with the G33 magnifier on my AR platform, I love the set up but could not justify spending another $1200-$1300 dollars to copy the set up over to my AK. After reading all of the positive reviews on the Primary Arms sights, I broke down and bought one. Best decision I ever made! At under $100 you are getting an outstanding red dot that, in my opinion, is on the same level as the AimPoint T1 for a fraction of the cost. I guess what I’m getting at is you could spend the money on a new AR and run a PA red dot on one of the rifles until you decide what to glass the other with. You won’t regret buying a PA sight…. I promise! |
