No man sized targets.
Im talking precision hand loads and good scope magnification suggestions around the $500 price mark. What is out there on the market right now?
Paper targets don't move. So Tracking is not really that important.

Distance you will be shooting at?  Caliber of rifle?

With the info given, and assuming this is a centerfire rifle, I'd suggest looking at the SWFA Super Sniper line.  The fixed 10 power scopes start at $300.

I too would suggest a fixed power, but higher mag(16x)... As much as you can afford.

Check out the Sightron Big Sky II line. 6-24x50mm would be a good mag range for you.

Agreed, look into the SWFA SS fixed 16x, and you'll get turrets that track straight for free.

I used a 6.5-20x Leupold EFA fine duplex, for round targets the dot works well.

I was already looing at the SWFA line scopes. Probably the 16x or the 20x

This image shows the SWFA crosshairs. I know that thinner helps with more precision work.

Generally speaking is .05 thick for the cross hair lines.... is that thin or think?

I ran into a few guys with variable power scopes and they all said the same thing. Even the dude with the nightforce.
He said he keeps it on 22x most of the time unless he is adjusting parallax.

If you can step up a few hundred bucks, the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x FFP is a killer piece of glass for the price.

I was totally considering that one too.
Where is a  good price for it?

I want to get into optics and precision shooting - handloands - for my ultramatch setup. I am trying to look before I leap.

Primary Arms and OpticsPlanet both occasionally run 10 percent off sales that work with the Vortex optics on their sites.

Nikon monarch or Buckmaster. I own both nd they are awesome. Shot out to 400 so far with them but my skill is the limiting factor, the recticle is crisp enough for further

Since your funds are limited but your highest priority is
being able to shoot accurately and precisely, I would suggest a high
magnification bench scope which is not variable powered.

For precision work, power, quality of the
optics, and ability to hold zero are the three most important thing to look
for.
 You basically cannot reproducibly
hit what you cannot see.
 Ask ANY world
class shooter trying to do the same thing and you will find they use scope with power in
the +40x range.
 I suggest fix power
because you will get better quality optics for the same price than variable.

Above your price point, been 12 years since I bought it, failed to add cost of living.

I got mine for 350 years ago used. As it is a varix-iii (leupolds old top of the line scopes from the 90s early 00s)
