| Im interested in the Magpul ASAP for my 6920. How hard is it to mount on the rifle? And does any one have directions? |
|
It replaces the standard backplate of an AR ... the one that holds in the selector detent and spring.
You take your stock off, put on the ASAP, make sure the spring / detent is still working and not getting crushed, and then put the stock back on. It's quite simple. |

It's quite simple. the selector detent is not located behind the plate. that's the takedown pin detent. just say'n. |

| Your Colt will have a staked castle nut, you need to get a good castle nut wrench, stick it on there, then hammer it to break the stakes free. Be careful not to scratch up the rifle. After that install is easy, make sure you stake the new nut though. If you don't have a proper stake tool a flathead screw driver will work. Tape up the area around where you are working to prevent any scratches. |

i didn't like the Magpul ASAP because of the clatter if you don't have your sling attached. I am using the Magpul MS2 sling, but for the mount i went with a Troy M4 mount. Linky here.
Edit- read the reviews on that link if you end up interested in the Troy mount, it will answer your questions about mounting it |

Not a stealthy set up for sure. That is the only thing I do not like, but can live with it. Is that Troy Ambi? |

I don't see what situation would call for that? |

It's a Colt, so the castle nut is properly staked. When you put the ASAP on put a new castle nut on it, torque to spec and restake. Restake it? I would think torqueing it to spec will be just fine. It can come loose if you don't stake it. Just torqing to spec is not enough, unless it's just a range toy and if it comes apart it won't put anyone's life in jeopardy. That's the reason the military requires it to be staked, there's a reason for doing it. Same for staking the gas key. |

I don't like that way that little square lock pin goes in. Seems like a poor design. I installed one once and knew just by looking at it I would never use one. I would get the plate with the side swivels machined into it before the ASP It keeps the buffer tube evenly aligned with the lower receiver. I have them on 2 of my lowers and I would put it on the other but it has an ACE stock. I have no problems and it works exactly as intended. I would recommend to get it. just my .02 |

No. It won't be. These are not legos. There are proper specs and procedures for a reason. I have personally seen them come loose. I have seen pictures and accounts of others coming loose. |

I have the same stakeing issue with my LMT can u guys help me with breaking the castlenut free without jackin up my rifle. My tools are kinda limited as far as a vise and stuff. i do have a AR multi tool. Use a punch and flatten out the stake, nut will come right off |
| I bought a wrench but it was slightly off and didn't fit into the holes on the castle nut, so I just used a punch and hammer and gave the castle nut one whack and it broke loose to where I could unscrew it the rest of the way. I also could not get either of those little rectangular metal pieces installed on the bottom of the castle nut; just did not fit, even the smaller one. The smaller one was close to fitting but it was grinding against the threads on the buffer tube. I left it off for now until I see a problem, but that day I was itching to shoot at the range, haha. |
