Hi everyone. I'm new to to AR 15 customization, so please bear with my lack of knowledge.

I have an AR 15 that came with a Bushnell red dot sight. I want to install magpul mbus sights on to the rifle as well, but I have the standard ar 15 handguard with cooling ports that I could install rail sections on to. The rifle has a low profile gas block and I was wondering if you could install the front mbus sight onto a bolt on rail section on the standard handguard. I'm trying to avoid buying an expensive handguard if I don'd need it.

Nope, just go ahead and buy something like a YMH tube and get ahead of yourself.  Wasting time and money trying to cheap your rifle will just be a waste of time and money.  We've all been thru it.

Okay, thanks for the quick answer. Is a free float tube necessary, or can a non free float work as well?

Free float tube with rails.  Don't settle for something too cheap.  Save up if you have to, you'll be happier in the end.

There are several options available but aceranch is right save up if you have don't try and half ass it together. I have seen people try and do what you want they end up wasting as much money as the rail would have cost trying to make it work then come and buy the rail.

Here's what I would do.  Buy some tools like a barrel wrench, stock wrench, punches, action block & vise block.  Don't waste your money on a barrel vise as you can make one easily with a block of hard wood.  Maybe a torque wrench if you can't borrow one.  Then you can install the free float tube of your choice and learn about your AR.  The guys on this forum will offer all the help and instruction you should need.  Or, buy a tube and have a smith/buddy put it on for you.
