What does the brass look like?

Could be bad ammo loads, bad brass, improper head-space, structural flaw in bolt.
More info about parts and condition/ammo/brass can help narrow it down.

^^^^^^^^^ what he said but still a quality bolt should hold up a lot better then that.

That bolt does not show much wear (at the tail and body) BUT there is a lot of brass on the bolt face.
Even one broken lug shows brass.
There are many sub-standard bolts on the market now. What is the story on this bolt? ammo? rounds fired?

We need more info...

Stoner bolt?

Three rounds were fired total. Bolt was brand new, and came with my carrier group. Was purchased on eBay back in January time frame, was supposed to be a new frontier armory ceramic bcg. Ammo was independence 5.56.

Is there signs of excessive pressure on the brass from one or more of the 3 rounds fired?

Brass was not retrieved at the range so no way for me to inspect it.

Just got my replacement bolt back after sending in one that had the exact same thing happen. The guy I got it from had called a couple weeks earlier saying they had a bad batch of bolts come in. I told him mine looked find and had fired 150-200 rounds with it at the time, and I would let him know if anything came up. Two weeks later a friend was shooting it and after 3 or 4 shots this happened. I called and sent it to him and got my replacement in less than a week.

They are the only ones I am aware of who do make a ceramic.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/284996/ar-stoner-enhanced-bolt-carrier-assembly-mil-spec-ar-15-223-remington-ceramic-plated

Their bolts are supposed to be made of 8620 instead of Carpenter 158.

They are pretty quickly establishing a reputation for themselves.

What brand were you using that had this issue?  Was it also purchased online?

Must be like those ceramic Glock 7s.  John McClane told me about those.

Oh boy, I just picked up one of those Stoner BCG  makes me wonder if should even use it?  I guess at the very least I might swap out bolts.  OP, is the bolt that failed MPI marked? The bolt that came with mine it.

That’s a lot of brass for three rounds.
Those two bolt lugs carry a large part of the load
5/2/2013 5:05:05 AM EDT
[#25]
That's not a lot of brass.

You can see that kind of brass marks on BCM bolts just from their test firing.  This is well established.  Some brass is software than others.  I wouldn't consider that.

As said above - most likely candidate is cheap bolt.  The fact you bought it from Ebay says a lot.......  don't buy gun parts from ebay.  Buy them from REPUTABLE dealers here with REPUTABLE brands that stand behind the products they manufacture, distribute, or sell.

Support the people who support this site.  Not ebay.

I couldn't tell you, it doesn't have any markings that I have seen. I got it from KAK Industry, who got it from a different supplier.

MPI doesn’t mean anything other than the steel it is structurally sound when it was tested , AR Stoner bolts that come on the BCG in the 140 dollar range are not properly hardened….they are too soft……at least a few batches of them were and I got one. Replaced with a RRA bolt, using the stoner carrier and life is good, not a mark on the bolt.

200 rounds AR Stoner bolt

Don't buy important parts from questionable sellers selling questionable parts on eBay.

Given the source of the bolt, I'd say that's the likely culprit, although it could be an ammo issue.

It was most likely a bad bolt made with poor quality materials. Since December, there has been a ton of people and manufactures trying to make money off of the current gun control scare. People who have no business making these parts have been trying to flood the market with sub standard merchandise for the past 4 months. This is what happens when you buy a BCG on EBAY. Stick to getting vital parts from trust worthy distributors and you will be okay.

Bolts should be made using Carpenter 158 or 9310. Some manufacturers have been switching to 9310 due to it being a little harder and less brittle.
