It seems like there are a lot of broken matech rear sights out there.  I realize there is no source for parts, so this may be some of the reason, but are these fragile sights?

Not if you follow the instructions and don't over-torque it.  People break them because they turn the shit out of the bone.

If you are .mil you can order an improved clamp through supply.

What's the correct torque?

I think the FM might have mentioned a torque value, but they don't exactly supply a torque wrench with it so I just tightened with the Allen wrench until it stopped turning, then gave it a tiiiiiiny bit more pressure.

So far it's held up great, even getting banged around in vehicles.  Occassionally the sight will snag on something and deploy itself, but that's part of why it is a good BUIS, it's easy to flip up.  It does look kinda fragile, but I haven't had a problem yet.  I 'm sure there are guys out there using it much harder than I am though.

I don’t have a FM.  But I found a one page instruction in my pile of junk.

Good find!

The other issue is that people treat it as a quick-release BUIS when it's not.  It's a dedicated rear sight and is not designed or intended to be constantly installed and removed, hence the red thread locker on the mounting screw.  Install it and leave it there.

Amen!  I have 3 of them and bought 1 for a buddy of mine.  Once it's mounted, leave it alone.  Mine isn't in a war zone, but it's done several 3 gun matches, lots of shooting, and soon will be doing room clearing and house entries as soon as the department rangemaster signs off on my personal AR for team use.

I've had mine for a few months and it hasn't loosened in the slightest with regular range use. (Loctite is a great product.) The sight settings stay put as well. What more could you ask for in a rear sight?

We tried ordering parts, too.  The ones that didn't get IMMEDIATELY canx'd had estimated shipping dates 0f 2015!  Faster and easier to get whole new assemblies for us.

There was someone on the EE about a week ago that was selling replacement screws and clamps, looks like they were his own production, machined items, but for $20, it sounds like it might be the solution for those of you that have had problems with them.

ETA:  Here's the link:  Replacement MATECH clamps

Disclaimer:  I am in no way affilitated with the seller, just a happy MATECH owner out to make his own choice look better by convincing as many other people as possible!

I bought a "new in bag" MATECH from Savagesniper21 on the EE, and it didn't come with a screw at all.  He does not respond to my IMs or E-mails, but that's another story.

Anyway, I was excited to see the ad Augee has linked, but I've e-mailed the guy at the e-mail address provided in his thread twice this week and haven't heard back from him.

I'd be happy to pay him $20 even though I don't need the clamp, just so I can actually USE this paperweight.

Not sure what the screw size is, exactly, but have you tried going to a hardware store, and looking for a screw?  I feel like the clamp would be the bigger problem to replace, the screw should be able to be sourced, possibly cut to size with a Dremel, but it seems to bear worth looking into.  Not quite *authentic*, but functional.

I have the correct  thread size screw, but the problem is that *apparently* (since I've never seen the screw) there is a step that allows it to fit under the clamp.  The clamp has a groove for a tab on the sight to fit into, and the hole in the clamp is slightly offset from the hole in the bottom of the sight.  What happens is that I can't get the tab to go into the groove with a regular screw in place.  It would appear that the screw needs to be relieved immediately behind the head to fit.

This is the second MATECH I've purchased.  The first one had cheap aluminum screws from the hardware store (silver) that wouldn't fit either.  At least that guy gave me my money back.

This time, it was supposed to be NEW IN PACKAGE, but the bag had NO screw at all.

But at least the guy with the beefed up clamp e-mailed me back yesterday, so I'll be purchasing one from him.

I won't be buying anymore of these things, that's for sure.  Compared to just about ANY OTHER name brand BUIS on the market today, they are inferior in durability.
