I need some help with some measurments.  I need to know how much barrel is forward of the front sight base on 14.5 and 16 barrels, what length gas tubes for middy, carbine and rifle.

I know, really stupid questions, but my rifles are not stored here (safe is too small for guns and hiding x-mas gifts - I need a bigger safe) and I am trying to help my father with a barrel choice.  Thanks.

What do you mean about the length of gas tubes?
I like:
Carbine length for 14.5 and lower.
Midlength for 16"
Rifle for 18"+

I am in possession of a gas tube that measures 9.5 inches, which I assume would go into a 7.5 barrel, but am not sure.  The tube was given to me years ago.  I never paid much attention to it, but I am now curious as to what lenghts each tube is, expressed in inches, not just Carbine, Mid-Lenght ect.

I really should not post before coffee.  I realize that a 9.75 (my bust originally posting 9.5) is carbine length, however, I still need the barrel length, minus muzzle device in front of the FSB for a 14.5 and 16 barrels.

Is it possible to install a 5.5 slipover permanently on a 14.5 barrel and be compliant.  I am thinking no, it will not be legal length, being short by about 3/4ths of an inch.

You can perm a XM177 moderator to a 12 1/2" barrel or have a 16" or 14 1/2" turned back and have one perm installed by 45BRAVO. It doesn't look too bad.

GIHardballer is my dad.  We have been going over and over about a new barrel for him.  So much so that my brain housing group is turning to mush.  Finally, today, we seem to have settled on a suitable barrel for him, including the 5" slipover flash suppressor from Bushmaster, a 16" mid-length.  He wants something different, as he already has his bases covered with other black/battle rifles in 5.56mm, 7.62mm and 30-06, so this gun will be a pure fun shooter.  The build will be constucted using an upper and buttstock assembly he has laying around, a 4-Pos stock, A2 Upper, to which will be added 16 Middy lightweight, with slipover XM177 type flash suppressor.  It will be different and have the look he wants.  The M4 barrel is not pleasing to his eye and he dislikes flattops (unless its a haircut or painted haze gray with airplanes onboard) and he likes the 2 extra inches of sight radius.  Thanks for the replies.
