Just picked up my new Mega MATEN upper/lower today!!! The build starts today!!! I've been wanting to purchase one of these to start a build for some time now. The quality and finish is top notch! (as usual for Mega) Prior to purchasing I was not excactly sure what would be completely included but was was impressed on how complete this combo truly is. See Below Additionally, I was not aware of the excact location of the rear take down pin spring hole on this model and if it was retained or not. I really like that they have it under the grip and it's retained with an allen head set srew. this will make grip choice and assembly a breeze. My CMMG MK3 (early version) lower has this hole in the same place however complicates the install if you want to use a Magpul Masad grip and probably some others. Very nice that Mega already took care of this problem by inserting the set screw to capture and hold down the spring! Thought I would post some up close pics of the receivers for those who have not really looked at these too closely. Whats was included from Mega as purchased from Ranier Arms brand new: -billet upper/ lower receivers -pre installed front and rear take down pins, springs, detents and rear spring retaining screw -pre installed ejection port cover, spring and pin -pre installed bolt release, spring, detent and pivot pin/screw -pre installed ambi bolt release, spring and pivot pin/screw -pre installed upper/lower tension screw -pre installed charging handle Not sure if "stripped" is a good way to describe this combo. As you can tell it's very complete minus only the Trigger group and pins, safety selector spring and detent, magazine release, spring and button and a complete BCG. Very happy with this purchase http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0845.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0844.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0838.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0837.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0835.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0838.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0839.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0840.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0843.jpg |

Here is where I'm at so far with parts I had on hand:
-18" Nemo Nitride rifle length gas -DPMS standard mil spec trigger Still need: -Handguard/Rail and barrel nut -gas block and tube -stock assembly -better trigger -Tons of Ammo! http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0849.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/IMG_0846.jpg |

Those are nice!
Yeah, the trigger was one I had in the box from all my -15's. A new trig will go in prior to range day. I'm leaning towards a Geissele Super Dynamic Enhanced. Any reports on this trigger? http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/trippcsi/777332.jpg |

I don't like it as well as a two stage for distance. Have a SSA-E for my .308 CMMG lower. |

I only have a Timney to compare it to but as far as I'm concerned, Geissele is the way to go. |

Very cool. I have one of the first MA TEN sets made (serial # is under 25). It has been a great platform for my .308 build, but I sure wish I had the ambi bolt release; the earlier runs didn't have the ambi option. Well worth the extra $29 IMO. Very cool to have an early version. Not sure how many are now out there but my lower is in the 600's. Other than the ambi bolt release did the early versions always come with as much complete as mine did? |

I agree about JP Bolts, and carrier's. I have their Low mass carrier's in a DPMS carbine, one in my Mega-10, with a 20" Krieger M110 tube and carbine stock. Their enhanced bolt groups in all 3. My 24" Mega-10 has a Young NM carrier.
I do run Colt carriers and bolts in my 5.56's. But then again they are all Colts, Ha-ha. Going to have to build a 5.56, if and when the panic slacks off. I'm very partial to the Super 3 Gun Enhanced triggers. I have 3 of them now, need another. I put one in my 6940, that has a TA11 on it. It's Never coming out of there. Makes my DPMS shoot like a dream. Someone said they aren't good for long range. They seem fine to me, in my Mega-10, But then again I'm use to them. I can't stand a stock trigger on any AR platform. In reality it just comes down to what seems to work out best for the person doing the shooting! But that old saying "Buy once, Cry once" Comes to mind when building a qualty weapon. |

OK! it's going to cost me 600+ just to get the KAC URX 3.1 and grip accessories to finish out the front end on this build! My God! Big boy toys https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LGjyNVZP2pA/UJaaw1SbYNI/AAAAAAAABYU/kJZU2aNfMf8/s1024/_W0A7182-1.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s6nvQGSwGUk/UJaa3FqIz3I/AAAAAAAABZ0/tJs901bJSD4/s1024/_W0A7185-2.JPG That's a nice stick!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yea it might have cost you more than a packaged one. But you built it the way YOU wanted it. Not what someone else thought you should have!!!!!!!!!!!. I'd rather have what "I" want not what someone else thinks I should have! |

I'd rather have what "I" want not what someone else thinks I should have! Thanks, In my opinion building is the way to go with ARs and 1911s. There are so many options and ways to make what you want. And of course the projects are fun! TRP3 will end up with a rifle he will really be proud of, taking the time to research and choose exactly what he wants. |

Agreed!!! I have 7 AR15's and the only one I haven't completely built from a stripped lower rec is my Colt MT. It's the only way to go. The shooting is only half the fun! IMO This will be my first 308 complete build. I was trying to keep the cost below 2K initially but I'm sure it will blow by that with the parts I want. Oh Well, it will be well worth it! |

That was my initial "budget" before I started too. I mean its awesome budget number for an ar-15. I don't know an exact # but it ended up at about $1000 over that before any optic.....I have helped a few people locally get parts together for ARs, only for some of them to get a little discouraged to find out their "dream" rifle costs a lot more then their "dream" budget. But what I tell them is to buy what you really want just do it slowly. Plus it's better to spend a long time on one project. Because once its over your just going to want to do another

I used the JPTRE-5.58B.925 Which is their large version. I used their standard on the ar-15. Its going to depend on the OD of your barrel… But you want the .350 exit. I also had my gunsmith who did the pin and weld (because I live in The AAC is for mounting a suppressor, but if you like to look then go for it…..The JP will probably be more effective though. EDIT: This is what a custom JPTRE-324 (with a .281exit) looks like on a .750" barrel. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-y_dsIJne5ek/T8LqnorHpWI/AAAAAAAABEY/bQUAqjzy0D8/s1024/_MG_5895-4.JPG Yes, I'm planning on purchasing the AAC supressor at some point, as well as digging the look of the Breakout. It's kinda half comp/brake and half flash supr. I do like the look of the JP's and as you mentioned, I;m sure they knock down the muzzle jump a bit more. My barrel is profiled more closely to a typ -15 barrel. At the end anyway. It's .750 at the gas block so slightly under that at the tip. The one I posted the pic of is .750 OD w/ a .350 hole according to JP. I'm not sure if they are referring to the OD where it meets the barrel or the overall OD.It would appear to be the smaller OD at the barrel end. I can always get one of each as well! |

Looks like you had a nice trip to Curts I am just starting a MaTen also and just received mine from Rainier last week. Hot little item as they are sold out again already. And the BCG is a PITA to find I to was going to get the CMMG from Curts then stumbled upon a DPMS chrome one online. Paid the same price as Curts was asking for the CMMG. Good luck with the build and it looks great so far. I will be lucky to have mine together by next year. Still collecting parts and waiting for things to ship. |

I've never been to his shop prior and had no idea he had so much AR gear. A great local resource. He stocks just about everything one might drool over online. So one thing I was not completely aware of regarding the MATEN that makes choosing a rail kinda tricky: The MATEN has an Armalite receiver height or aka (DPMS high). I always just assumed it was a DPMS low hieght receiver. However, in the case of the Troy rail you need the supplied nut to be DPMS not the Armalite size. Curt was helpful enough to point that out and he swapped the nut so the rail would fit and align at the top. Material list as of now currently installed: -Mega MATEN ambi upper/lower -Vltor/BCM Gunfighter large latch -Several lower parts from a DPMS LPK -KNS Gen 2 Mod 2 Non-Rotating Trig/Ham Pins -CMMG .308 BCG -Nemo 18" Nitride rifle length gas -Ranier Arms Low Pro extended gas block. -YHM rifle length gas tube black coated -Milspec 5 pos buffer tube -DPMS 308 carbine spring/buffer -Vltor IMOD stock -Troy TRX 308 Extreme rail 13.8" (DPMS HIgh) -GG&G XDS-2 Tactical Bipod -Magpul 20rd pmag -Gieselle Super Dynamic Enhanced trigger group- -PWS comp |

I am currently waiting on my Troy 13.8 MRF to show up in the mail. They are on backorder and will not be here until the 3rd week of December. Still need to order a barrel from rainier and a few other parts for my upper. And as for the trigger well still reading up on that one. |

Post up how you like the trigger once the build is done. Trying to figure out what is going in mine. Looks good! Ok, I looked at the performance chart on Geissele site prior to buying this trigger and determined this would be the model best suited for the shooting I would be doing with this rifle (primarily bench and prone). After I quickly installed it this evening I conducted about a hundred dry fires into a semi-firm foam block laid into the receiver and quite a few into the bolt. The break is very clean and smooth and of coarse on a completely different level than a milspec. I did however feel that the take up was a little on the long side for what I prefer so I installed a spare 1/4-24 set screw into the grip hole and took out about half of the total take up. After fine tuning the set screw I secure it with blue loc-tite. Now it's where I want it. I now have minimal take up and the ready hold is very predictable with just a "thought" of additional press for the hammer to drop. This is a method I have done for years to get rid of any unwanted take up even on the milspecs. This does not soften or smooth out the pull, it just reduces the needed overall travel prior to the break. With the Geissele, the smoothness is not an issue. It's a very smooth pull during take up thru break. I know I will be very happy with this at the range. and I'll give a report after the first day out. Dam Rain!!!! |

spectra... If your going with a Geissele... unless your building a 3gun style you would probably want this one. check the charts on G's website. Gonna try and get over to the "Pit" in the morning and push some rounds through it. If you want stop by and pull a few to see if you like the trig. |

Let me know how it works out am interested in hearing about it. Hope it is not a mad house at the Pit. Lately every time I drive by there the parking lot is packed. I have not been there in over a year. |
