Hello All,

I am getting ready to order a mega billet upper/lower.  I have been reading another post and see there are some concerns regarding free floating the hand guard.  Please excuse my ignorance, this will be my first AR-15.  How can you determine if a handguard will work or not.  I really like the YHM "Smooth" handguard.  How can I tell if it will work before I order it??

Thanks

the YHM free floating handguards simply screw on to the new barrel nut.  Can't think of any reason they would not work.

The handguards that you will have to "question" if they will work or not are the Daniel Defense Lite Rails, the Larue's, the Troy Extreme Battle Rail, etc.

If you look at the pics of these rails, you will see "tabs", hex head bolts or "rotation limiter".  Just picture it.....You have a billet upper which has different external dimensions from that of a standard forged "mil-spec" upper.  The rails that I discussed were designed around these dimensions.  You may be able to modify some of them to work.

On the other hand a Daniel Defense Omega rail will work just fine, and it FF the barrel.  As will most(or all) YHM rails, Midwest Rails, Samson, etc.  There still many choices for a FF handguard, smooth or railed, while using the Mega upper.

Awesome responses guys.  Thanks for your help.  Sounds like I am GTG with the YHM "Smooth".  Does anyone have an opinion on a barrel/  I am thinking Gov't mogel 1:7 twist in 20" length  that I can cut down to 18".  I don't see many options for 18" barrels out there.

Thanks again

I have a KAC free float rail on a Mega upper with no issues, FWIW.
