Mid Length Fixed Stock Pic Thread (Page 4 of 10)
I finally broke down and got a fixed stock for my rifle. You guys are a bad influence. 
I am testing a Meprolight M21 reflex sight at work in the photo, but will probably run one of those and a 3-9/4-12 scope on a QD base to swap as needed. Beyond that, i just need to find a good sling to carry it, and she's almost done. (need a flashlight and maybe a PA green laser for goofing off) Hoping to make a shroud out of some ATACS fabric since I can't bring myself to paint the rifle (dont want to screw it up) I figure that the M21 will work in the cold where an Aimpoint or Eotech would die horribly (batteries last 30 seconds in -35/40f) so it would work great for a wolf hunting optic. Not to mention that even with my glasses, most red dots are goofy from astigmatism but this actually works for me. Without my glasses I'd still be able to manage torso shots at 100 yards in a rush. (I just see a blob)

not sure what you mean by AP, but I lean towards the A1 upper on the midlength barrel for the longer iron sight radius. A flat top and an M4 barrel seem to go together better. But I'm really no help, because right now this is my favorite AR 14.5 midlength barrel, switched uppers and barrels from pics 2 & 3  |

FYI, both guns have Colt 'CS' stocks which IMO is the best fixed stock for the AR platform. Shame they're so hard to find. |

| Expensive too, for what they are. I think the Cav Arms A1 stocks are a decent modern option, but their buttplate is junk from what I understand. I would like to see one cloe up. Frankly, I use standard A1 stocks and doubt I'll ever need to buttstroke someone with it, so they work fine for me. I really like fixed stock carbines, and use a GP style sling on mine - very simple, very cheap, and the fastest transition to handgun (no adjustment) I've found, but I'm no ninja either. |

(Range shooting, 3-gun, hunting, whatever) and I think a fixed stock is more appropriate for that type of rig. I do prefer a retractable stock on my carbines though because I'm more likely to use them for training classes and CQB type shooting. For that type of shooting, I like being able to shorten up the stock so that I can more easily square up to the target. Right tool for the job and all that. |
