I currently have a GG&G Slic Thing on my FSB. I have a Sling attached to the left rear of my Vltor E-Mod Stock and to the QD on the Slic Thing on the left side of the FSB. I have a light mounted on the right side of the FSB on the Slic Thing rail. I have to reach my thumb over the top of my hand guard to press the light on - not a big deal but not real ergo.

I have jury rigged a short rail on the bottom of my plastic handguard to hold a Magpul AFG. I like the AFG and intend to keep using it.

So, with all of that said, I “think” I’d like to just get a two-piece railed hand guard. I’m not concerned with a free-floating hand guard for accuracy improvements. I just want to clean up the front of the rifle a little with a solid proven hand guard to attach a sling, mount an AFG and a light…that’s all of the bling I want on my rifle.  I want a QD sling point on the left side of the hand guard near the receiver to stay clear of the light and the AFG.  I can then mount the light on the left side of the hand guard for easier thumb access and the AFG will mount easily underneath.

I’ve looked at MI and Troy two-piece hand guards and I’m leaning towards the Troy. The Troy is only a few ounces heavier than the plastic hand guard, has a built-in QD point on each side, and is less than 2-1/4” wide.

Here are a couple of questions:
1 - Has anyone had any experience with the Troy Drop-In Battle Rails for a Mid-Length?
2 - Does anyone have a quality lightweight suggestion other than Troy or MI?
3 - This is a real goofy question that I thought about in the shower last night…Since the hand guard is held in place with forward spring pressure, has anyone heard of someone running into a fixed object striking an attachment (flashlight?) pushing the hand guard rearward against the Delta spring and cause the hand guard to come off of the rifle? Is that clear as mud? Just wondering…

I’d appreciate any ideas, experiences, etc.

Thanks

I am intending to go MapPul MOE, when the middy length becomes available.  The cost is extremely attractive, as is the reputation of that manufacturer.  The clincher though is the weight - it appears to be a very lightweight solution, which the option of adding rails only where you want rails - which also helps with the weight control.

I don't actually have an MOE stock though (since they don't make them for Middy's), and with all their delays, who knows if it'll be out any time soon.  Maybe not the best plan for you - just saying how I'm going.

You can use the MI FSB picatinny rail and a standard military type barrel mount side sling swivel (Stag sells them too) to place the light and the sling on the same side. Cheaper than a new handguard.

The Troy is extremely solid and well machined. You will be very happy with it . I have a 7" on my Bushmaster M4. The midlength is exactly the same just 2 " longer. It is rock solid and the price is in the midrange and well worth it.  It is smaller than some of the other ones out there and fits good in the hands similar to a standard handguard in thickness.

I really like the MOE hand guard.  I contacted Magpul about when the midlength MOE hand guard would be out and they said mid to late summer but from what I understand, it would be more like Fall. I planned to wait for it to come out but I really "think" I want the sling to attach to just in front of the receiver on the hand guard.  The midlength MOE (according to pics in the 2010 Magpul catalog) does not have a place to put a rail that far back. Its like they just skip the rear 25% of the hand guard. Oh well...

I have the Troy 9" drop-in (and used to have the Troy 7" drop-in, but sold that upper).  Both were great and locked up tight.  I highly recommend it for someone who doesn't need a FF rail.

AIM has them for $159 and free shipping.
