My Del Ton barrel just arrived and I had to do a quick mock up.

The lower is off my 1980 SP1 rifle.

Upper is one I traded for.

602 bolt carrier for now.

I was originally going to do one of the "mini M16A1" builds with cut down triangle hand guards and a type D or E stock.

Now I leaning towards a Middy XM177ish build.

RRA hand guards and gas tube are on the way so I will post some pics when those arrive.

So show me your mid length builds.

Maybe it will help me make up my mind.

P.S. Anyone know of a better solution for the pivot pin? This one hangs out the side.

If I can't come up with something better I will just use the original double sided screw.

I'm thinking of something similar, but would cut the barrel down and using a Brick moderator.
Which barrel did you buy ?
What is the dia at the FSB ?

thanks

It's .750 at the gas block but you can't beat the price.

Looks good! I lust after your slip ring as I have just the build for it, let me know if you want to trade it out for a newer looking one.

I say go with the XM look and have the barrel cut down. I will post a picture of mine then here in a bit but I used the same barrel and HG for it.

Well most here have seen this version

But at times I mix it up a bit and do this with it:

But now that I have this part...I see a big change in its future

Here's my middish XM177 build I built a few years ago.
Barrel started out as a 16" M4 and turned down to accept a modified .625 FSB and slip-on flashfider of unknown manufacture.

OP: I like the cut down triangle hand guards, someone posted one recently with a "CH" forge code upper and I thought it was a really nice look.

Sucks when you have to use a 602 carrier as a stand in...first world problems and all

As for the upper to lower issue. Are you planning on keeping that lower with that upper? I would assume that you want to be able to put the SP1 back to stock if you wanted to and if so then ignore my next sentence. If that upper is going to be mated to that lower you could have a bushing inserted for both of them that would then allow you to use a 601 style non-captive pin.

There is a guy m60joe or something that does them for registered receiver SP1s so they can then use any upper. I have no idea how much that would run you but I think a cheaper and better option would be to order up a NoDak lower and then either put your SP1 back to stock if you can and want to or sell that lower if the screw pin bothers you.

The plan is to build several large hole uppers to go on my SP1 lowers.

I always want to keep the ability to return my SP1's back to stock.

All I did to this one was swap out the receiver extension.

As for the 602 bolt carrier, I literally spent the last of my money on this parts lot, so it will have to do for now. :)

The RRA handguards came in today.

I'm still not sure what to do with it.

I think I need to do some cut down triangles. Anyone got a set they want to get rid of?

I need to build more uppers so I can try all the different combinations. :)

Please forgive the NoDak A2 lower, the rifle also now has a black ejection port cover spring from LWRC.

I had one of the members here photoshop this up for me months before anyone of us had actually built one to see what a middy XM would actually look like

it led to a couple of middy 6.8SPC builds... one a 607 and the other a XM177

some pics of the early mock ups

ETA found another early mock up pic

I've got a retro-ish-carbine built with a DelTon middy barrel.  Shoots great!

Built it with an NDS gray A2 lower and one of their gray C7 uppers.
