In my quest for a new upper I found myself eyeballing mid-lengths simply because they look good without all that barrel sticking out from the fsb, longer sight radius, and the fact that I can actually USE the bayonet lug ,

What are the real reasons behind a mid length system other than the ones stated above? Are there any drawbacks?
Thanks!

The midlength is smoother in operation (less barrel past gas port) and should be more reliable and durable. There are less options on venders for middie barrels and certain configurations that are hard or impossible to find. There are less accessories (ie, rail systems) for the middie but thats changing. If you get a heavy barrel the middie will be heavier than a CAR gas system (more of the heavy portion before the gas port). I like the midlength both in operation and feel.

I can see no reason why not to go with the mid-length with a 9.0 rail.  It will be my next upper.

I'm thinking I agree with all of this.

I am new but have been reading for a long time now.  I have decided that a middy will be my first AR build.  Can not really find a reason not to, and I really like the overall looks of a mid also.

Same here, been reading for a while and have finally settled on assembling a rifle.  I dont care for the 20" or longer barrel and while I came to like the 16" barrels, the carbine guards were just too short for my big hands.  The mid-length just seemed like such a perfect fit.  I'll be ordering my kit form Del-Ton at the end of the week and buying my lower at a gun show this weekend (now if I could just settle on which lower...)

The Del Ton uppers are very attractive, price wise. Anyone have experience with them? I'm wondering specifically about the barrels they use.

Thorgrim, drop them an e-mail with your question.  It might take one or two days for an answer, but they will happily answer your questions.

I have 2 uppers using Delton barrels, They are made by Wilson, (Tony himself states this) Both uppers are shooting very well.(Under 1@100yds if I do my part and use good ammo) They are 1in9 twist. 1 upper has an Eotech and the other has a Trijicon TR21R. They bothe have about 1k thru them and have had zro problems out of the uppers. The people at Delton are easy to work with and they look after you in making sure you are happy with the product.

I'm very pleased with my DELTON midlength also.  David

My thoughts exactly. That's why I finished slapping mine together this weekend. CMMG 14.5" middy barrel, Mega upper, Mega lower, CMT parts.

Ain't she sexy?

Actually..  I've heard different.

A very knowledgeable shooter from this sight (who I know personally) built two IDENTICAL rifles with the exception of MID/CARBEAN length gas systems.

He shot the both of them side by side and could not distinguish between the two.  Normally I would take this type of testimonial with a grain of salt, but I know the guy to be legit and such!

That said, I still would like to get the sight radius of the middy some day.

IMHO a middy gas system and 16" barrel is the perfect combination.   They are reliable.  They use the space efficiently.  They run at lower pressures.  You can still use a bayonet (if that floats your boat).  They have a better sight radius.  I really don't see any down sides.
