Howdy.  I tried a search on this, found a little, and a lot of folks wanting/excited about a "middy."  I have a few guesses about just what it is ... a mid length gas system, somewhere between a carbine and a rifle length?  I would really appreciate the short, if not remedial, explanation as to what it is and what the "advantage is?  Thanks.

Gas system is 2" longer ( 9" vs 7" ) and and as a result has less gas pressure coming back so it's a little easier on the components.  It also has the benefit of a longer sight radius.

This is carbine (7") vs. mid length (9"), correct?  And if a rifle gas system is still longer then it would be even easier on components? Thanks.

Ok, talk about a complete answer to a question .... data and a graph!  Many thanks!

A carbine length system can have the same pressure coming to the bolt carrier as any other length.  It depends on the port size.  Discussion is pointless without taking into account a specific gas port size.

You also have to take into account how soon after firing the gas is ported to the system, the Dwell Time.

Generally, you'll find many people agree, the cycling of a Mid-Length is slower and less harsh than a Carbine.  NOT that you should avoid Carbines, but many opt for the middy for that reason, NOT that it makes that big of a difference, but all things being equal the Middy "MAY" have less malfunctions or parts break.

A cheap middy vs a quality Carbine, the cheap middy very well may have more problems than the Carbine because of the difference in quality, I'd think that is a perfect valid argument.

The difference is small enough, and panic buying is bad enough, that if you find a Carbine you like, go ahead and buy it and do NOT hold out for the middy, is another perfectly valid argument.

Also consider that for many of us, it's something different from what we already have. While we would like to believe that all of our rifles must have a lofty "serious" purpose, sometimes the fun factor of trying something new is purpose enough. After all, has your gun collection ever been truly "complete"?
