| Hello. I am thinking that for my next rifle build, I might put together a rifle that has a midlength barrel. What are the advantages and disadvantages to the midlength gas system? Does it increase reliability of the rifle? I already know some of the advantages: increased sight plane, less wear and tear on rifle due to lower gas pressure impulse, larger area on the handguard, etc. Or should I stick to a regular carbine length gas system? Thanks. |

I switched my Bushmaster carbine over to a RRA/Wilson mid-length chrome lined barrel from Steve @ ADCO, turned to A2 profile... COULD NOT be happier. All the things you mentioned, plus what Halfcocked said, PLUS if you ever go with a railed forend, you get more "real estate" without having to buy a special rig that extends past the carbine FSB, and if you've ever been in a CQB match and accidentally grabbed the AR a tad too far forward, you'll appreciate the extra 2" of HG's. |

well i was definatly looking into the mid-length gas system... rra makes some nice chromelined barrels... I started to shy away from them when I got the SSS deal rasII... i don't think that midlength really has anything on carbine... bayneoot woo hoo... sight radius doesn't really matter if you use a .625fsp on carbine guards... etc... the amount of money that it would have cost to get my carbine in midlength would have cost at least $200 more... and i didn't think for that $200 it was worth it... besides... i believe that rasII are the best handguards in the world so I'd have to go with daniels defense or something else... most carbine users now a days seem to use the vertical grip anyways... so the extra mounting space isn't really required for my hands... midlengths are a little more heavy too which I didn't find appealing for what my weapon is designed for... seems to me too that carbine and full length gas systems have proved themselves... not that midlength aren't just as reliable... they just aren't really combat proven... but i'm sure no problems would be experienced... |
