This might be a silly question, but here goes.  If I install a mil-spec tube (5 or 6 position) and replace the commercial tube, will my castle nut and plate work OK, or do I need to get the complete kit?

Thank You!

It should. I do have one back plate that only works on one specific tube but other than that the rest of the ones I have work on them all, and should as the threads inside your receiver do not change.

Nope, different threads so they won't fit.  You'll need a new lower too, one that has milspec threads.

I know your joking, but don't joke like this. I get people all the freakin time asking for mil spec castle nuts and milspec receiver end plates to fit on their "mil spec" lower receivers

Yeah, he's messin' with you.

The way the threads are formed is what makes the 2 tubes different - but the threads are the same.

no, the way the tubes are made are the reason they're different. The com tube is extruded, the whole thing. The milspec is forged and milled out

no, it's because the mil-spec threads are rolled in (stronger) than the cheap way of
threading them on a lathe (hence the larger commercial OD)
