Ok, I'm an AR noob. I freely admit this. I ordered this rifle from my local gun shop:

Patrolman's Carbine

They asked fixed handle or detachable and I went with fixed. Note here that the options on the website are A2 or A3.

I took delivery on Thursday 9yes I looked at it, but being a noob I didn't notice the difference) and went about the manual getting ready for sighting in on Saturday. But lo, and behold I appear to have an A1 upper! I called them back this morning and they are calling their supplier to ask him why I have an A1. So far, no answer.

I have plans to shoot this rifle tomorrow. Should I? Or just wait till Monday and see what the story is. I told them I would mail his upper back for the right one, or just return the rifle, which I don't want to do(Mom and Pop store).

I'm conflicted. Part of me says just keep it, and part of me wonders whether I even got what I paid for.

Personally I would rather carry an A1 upper than an A2 upper.  If you aren't making it a flattop, the A1 wins out every time in my book.

Can you educate on the pros and cons?

Edit: Plus, I'm finding a heck of a time getting sight in info. I get instructions for the A2 everywhere, but never the A1. Tried the FAQ here too.

Its odd that you got an A1. But I agree with this. A1 over A2. At least for me.

I agree. If I went with a fixed CH upper I'd choose the A1 any day.

Alright, I suppose I will keep it and tell the shop not to worry about it. Can someone give me a good rundown on the A1 pros and cons? Maybe a link to some sight in info? Going to range with a gun shop guy tomorrow for some instruction.

Basically, the A2 has elevation adjustment, which the A1 lacks. The A2 is more or less a "target" sight, with easily manipulated thumbwheels for both windage and elevation.

The A1 has just windage adjustment, and is much better for a "set and forget" zero. It will work just fine, and there is less to mess up or get damaged.

I would not shot it and hold out for the A2  the differance is in the sight

You sight it in exactly the same.  Just ignore the part about setting the elevation as there is no elevation adjustment on the A1.  Also you'll need something to turn the windage knob on the A1, a bullet tip works fine.  The A1 is a much simpler, sturdier design than the A2.  Once you've got it set, you don't have to worry about it getting knocked around like you would with the A2.

It really depends on if you rather the A2 over the A1 site system. If you don't like it, don't shoot it. You likely won't be able to return it.

Keep the A1 its the strongest variation of sigyts on an M16.You adjust the elevation with the front post..way more simple and that means stronger. You wanted fixed handle you got the best

A1 uppers likely don't have M4 feedramps cut into them making it slightly more likely to jam under full auto fire. (no worries)
A1 is the more robust design and more (classically AR) IMHO. It weighs less too!

Have you ever knocked an A2 sight out of alignment? I've used an lmt fixed rear sight for years and never had (or seen) any of the problems people claim about the a2-not that I think there's any real advantage to an a2 beyond someone maybe wanting to use it in a match at a local club

I didn't know bushy sold that with an a1, randomly using up the parts still left in Maine in fine Colt tradition

I carried the A2 for years before we finally switched over the M4.  At the end of shift, the elevation knob was never where it had been at the beginning of shift.

I've never knocked an A2 out of adjustment either. I can see how it could happen.
One thing is for sure, an A1 isn't moving once it's set.

umm I may be a little out of the loop... but they offer it as the brochure says in A2 and A3 Variants.  You got an A1?

You can make the A2 sight non elevating by getting a longer index srew for the leelvation wheel so it wont turn.

Which is why I asked for a pic. It would eliminate all the guessing.

OP: CAN YOU FIND A PICTURE THAT MOST CLOSELY RESEMBLES YOUR RIFLE IF YOU CAN'T UPLOAD A PICTURE?

i'm sure i'll get flamed, but....
the  horizontal knob an a A2 carry handle is not a elevation knob. yes it changes the point of impact up or down, but elevation is adjusted at the front sight post.
THEN the rear knob is adjusted for RANGE.
sight it in per specs, then when you look at  a target at 800 meters, you rotate the knob to 8.
you don't do it like that, no kidding, no one does, outside of Marines on a range, with a DI in their ear.
OP if your upper has a "bruton bump" or a csae delector it is more properly called a C-7 style upper. Named for the Canadian C-7 and-8.
They took the good and pitched the bad from our A2.

If the non removeable carry handle doesn't bother you than I too would keep it. I have no idea how it got on your rifle though. If there is any chance of returning it don't fire it. Don't feel bad about the mon and pop shop, if they have been in business longer than a week they have delt with this before.

Yes it is.  Like you said, it's supposed to be used to adjust elevation for range, not zero, but it's still an elevation knob.

He ordered a non removable carry handle.  Just not the one he got.

Based on your info I'm keeping the A1. Sighted in today, great time had by me. Perhaps one day in the future I'll buy a flat top and swap out the uppers, but I'm enjoying the iron sights for now. Thanks to everyone for the input, helped out a lot!

I think you'll like your choice.

Plus, wehn your freinds look at the rifle, there are no sight adjustment knobs for them to play with

OP, would you post a pic of the entire rifle? I'd like to see it.

If you ever wanna sell that A1 upper, shoot me an IM!

A1 rear sight are much better than A2. However if this is not what you order than you should ask for a replacement.
