I was told by someone claiming to be an AR-15 armorer that mixing a bolt from one manufacturer with a barrel from another frequently causes head space problems.  I believe that he's full of fecal matter and just wanted to sell me one of his uppers, but I thought I'd ask.  I have a Wilson Combat match grade SS barrel and a Spikes AR-15/M16 BCG (on order).  Has anyone ever had a problem?

It's rare that you will have a headspace problem with new components from reputable sources. Having said that, it never hurts to check the headspace just to be safe.

I've asked about carrier/bolt swapping. I've been warned that bolts are headspaced for the gun but you can safely swap the carrier from gun to gun.

New barrel and bolt assuming reputable companies should not be a problem.  You run the risk of headspace issues if using a well used bolt with a well used barrel extension that did not mate together.

I justified the $50 for a set of headspace gauges for building ARs just to put that issue to rest for me.

Have you ever found something wrong?

Nope, but I've only built one so far.  It headspaced perfectly with a new barrel and new BCG of different brands.

I got the set of Forster .223 GO, NO-GO, and FIELD so it also allows me to check for worn headspace on heavily fired rifles.   You just have to pop the extractor out of the bolt.  Then insert the gauge and try to push the bolt closed with finger pressure.
