Way back in '09 there was a thread on the 608.  unclemoak wrote Mr Knight with several questions (and several suggested questions) about the 608; does anyone know if he ever received the answers?

The questions/suggested questions listed on the '09 thread were:

What are the handguards made out of and what diameter are they?
Why do the four known examples have 607? style moderators on them instead of the original conical flash hiders?

Is the stock is held firmly by the stock screw or is it free to rotate on
the buffer tube, and do the hand guards rotate or are they held in a
fixed position?

Are any vent holes or drainage hole's in the handguards or end cap?

I'm in the process of trying my hand at reproducing a 608 and am interested in the answers.

I would also be interested in the solutions other people came up with; particularly with regards to the handguard and method of fixing the stock.

Also, ldgunner posted a picture of a flash hider he picked up; does anyone know what it was for originally?

Thanx

Can't really speak to the rest of the questions, but I think some people have used the M3 Grease Gun clamp on cone flash hider.

John Thomas has made some 608 parts, I'm sure he'll be by at some point with more help.

I know unclemoak has made the stock and cone flash hider,
And John Thomas is currently making the handgaurd and front cap.
So I assume both have built that model, and have some imfo.
hopefully they will chime in.

MY65PAN turned out one or more conical flash hiders back in 2008 or early 2009.  And HeatnBeat has done an endcap and an aluminum tube handguard as well (although he said it took way to much effort and time).  MY65PAN, I believe also did some stocks as well.

As far as the stock that I have (which I believe is a MY65PAN, could be an unclemoak), there's no provision for indexing.  It was suggested just to crank down the screw and call it good.  Although, a small set screw could be added to prevent rotation.  I may do that.

I'm not sure whether I'll go with a true 608 handguard.  Some of the 608s pictured have standard GI end caps that just abut the tube, rather than flanging over it.

I'm tempted to use a Hogue free float hand (not the over-molded one) as it's small diameter is close to that of the original.  I would just have all the knurling turned off it and have it powder coated and forgo the slip ring and end cap altogether.

Won't be for a while, as I'm just in the SBR phase.

Ok, my stuff is unclemoak.

I guess I could answer the handguard diameter.  It's pretty much dictated by the barrel nut and slip ring.  If you have each you can just measure them.  Although, John Thomas had to relieve some area for the gas tube by cutting a channel for it to rest in.  I believe I read that he did that.

I ordered one from Him and ya he cuts a small slot on inside for the gas tube.
If you don't want to go the sbr  route, you can use a 16" carbine front end with a lo pro gas block, relocate the fsb to the front of the barrel,
And Dr. Thomas will make a longer handgaurd to cover it up,
I think that's how he build his.

M1, I sent you a PM.  Thanks much.

I didn't know JT was making handguards and endcaps for others.  That would be really handy.

The non-SBR route sounds interesting but I want the front end less than 16" so there's no getting around that.  :D

That 608 info is Bigot.

As far as I know My65 Pan was all 607 and Ucle Moak was all 608,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The problem is the tubing for the HG.  Aluminum is not the stuff.

There's a picture of MY65PAN's flash hider in that link.  Very similar to unclemoaks if not identical.  Maybe it's a one off.

I really prefer the abutted end cap over the larger one (another picture in that thread).  Looks good.

Damn, that's sexy .
Did you pin the buffer tube?

I do make the handguard caps and anodized aluminum handguards.  As mentioned earlier in this thread, I do cut a channel in the handguard to accomodate the gas tube.  This also prevents handguard rotation.  I didn't addd anything to the buttstock where it attaches to prevent rotation.  I have no trouble with it wanting to spin.  No trouble at all.

I made a custom length barrel from a heavy barrel so I wouldn't have to go the short-barreled rifle route, yet still give it a pretty balanced look.  For any newer guys who haven't seen it, a few pictures are below:

I bought the cone and an original Colt 10" barrel marked "MP" between the FSB from a guy years ago at a show in KY.  The barrel is new old stock. He said he had both of these items since the late 1970's.

Would go well with this 'Over the water' survival kit I saw this morning on ebay - seller was: 7040craig  He still has it, included the raft, hardbox, everything. Very cool but useless. Ultimate man-cave display though.
