I was thinking of installing a free floating hand guard.   Is it feasible to trim the front sight down into a low profile gas port?  I know they aren't that expensive but I like tinkering.

Were these FSP's. taken off the gun first?  I want to do this but have a welded on flash suppressor, makes removing the FSP problematic...

You can do it while still attached.

Just make sure you do it with a handguard that uses the stock barrel nut, and the handguard cap will have to be removed or trimmed down.
Trimming down is easier, if you are trying to remove Ive had the best luck cutting as far into with a pair of snips as possible and then using pliers/grips in each hand and tearing against each other the rest of the way.
Be careful trying to just cut the cap straight off, you can nick the barrel pretty easily
